Canola Oil….Good or Evil!

canola oilEnjoy this wonderful article written by Marcia Mundell

It’s in everything.  If you read labels on processed food, salad dressings, cookies, crackers, junk food, cereal, pet food etc. then you know I am talking about CANOLA OIL,  also known as Rapeseed oil.

It is, in my books, EVIL!

I avoid canola oil at all cost.  I bet you want me to tell you why.  And I certainly will.

If there is one oil that will stunt your life expectancy then this is it.  Canola oil, in health circles, is known as FRANKENFOOD.  Without research and testing,  Canola oil was approved by the USDA in 1995.  Almost all Canola crop is genetically modified to be more disease and drought resistant.  We do not know what the GMO oil is doing to human DNA.  We do know that cows that are fed  lots of canola oil in their feed become sick as they cannot metabolize it….who knows what it is doing to the human body.

Canola oil turns rancid very quickly.  It is a delicate oil developed through the hybridization of rape seed (the name canola is derived from – oil from Canada).  Rancidity is not the only problem with canola oil.  The oil is processed with deodorizers.

According to the Weston A. Price Foundation website and an article titled THE GREAT CON-OLA…it is said that canola oil is a poisonous substance, an industrial oil that does not belong in the body.  It contains chemical warfare agent mustard gas, hemagglutinins and toxic cyanide-containing glycocides; it causes mad cow disease, blindness, nervous disorders, clumping of blood cells, depression of the immune system.  This is what detractors say about canola oil.

So what is it doing on our grocery store shelves and why is it in baby formula, processed foods etc.  Because it is cheap to manufacture.

When you are considering oil for cooking and salad dressing there are some things to consider.

1.  It better not be GMO.

2.  Choose cold pressed or extra virgin.

3.  The oil should be in a dark glass container.

4. Choose organic.

5.  I would not opt for canola oil at all.

Whenever we go out for dinner, which is not too often anymore, knowing what is in the foods in restaurants nowadays….I always take my own salad dressing.  That is to ensure that I am not eating canola oil.  Most ready made salad dressings are produced with canola oil and I do not want canola oil in my body.  Not now, not ever!

My oils of choice are Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Walnut Oil, Sesame Oil and I have been known to use Ghee as well.

If you had an alignment issue with the wheels on your car, what would you do? Get new tires, ignore the problem and continue to drive or get to the root of the problem and fix it?

Well, look down at your feet without changing anything and notice your alignment. Which way are your feet pointing?  How do your toes look? Where is the weight on your feet? What are you going to do to fix your alignment.

I also love to check out how other people are standing and walking – maybe it’s my occupation but I think it’s cool.

I used to stand like this: Yikes- after years of figure skating I had some mighty strong external rotators among some other things. But once I really noticed this “duck” foot positioning (and recalled how many times my mum told me to walk with my feet forward), I started to learn exercises that would correct this problem.  It took me years to correct this habit and to re-align the muscles in my legs, back and hips, but I did it! I didn’t put a band-aid solution on it, I went to the root of the problem and slowly but surely corrected it.

There are some days that my right foot (external leg rotation from the hip) still likes to creep out…but I notice it and correct it.  These changes do not happen overnight but with a conscious effort to notice your posture and the positioning of your feet, you can make changes with some very simple exercises.

Read Katy Bowman’s website http://www.katysays.com/ to correct any alignment issue – she is fabulous.

Read any of Pete Egoscue’s books.

Try this exercise: I love singing “Keep them separated” while wearing my toe separators – you won’t believe the freedom your feet and toes will begin to feel. Another great time to wear these are with a pair of socks on while you are reading a book in bed.  Start with 5 minutes and build up from there.  Let me know how happy your toes and feet are feeling!!!

Mixed Vegetable Seaweed Rolls with Sesame Dipping Sauce

I bought seaweed and it sat unused for a long time.  I eventually started by putting a piece of Kombu in soups or when I was boiling water or making rice to increase the nutritional value.

I like sushi, which uses Nori wraps but I couldn’t get myself to make anything with seaweed at home.  Then one day, I was ready and after reading many recipes I found this one by Ani Phyo in her book Ani’s Raw Food Detox.

It is super simple to make and super delicious.

ani nori wrap (1)

  • 2 nori sheets, raw and untoasted preferably
  • 2 tbsp miso, unpasteurized, any colour
  • 2 cups sprouts, any type
  • ½ c sliced avocado
  • ¼ c julienned cucumbers
  • ¼ julienned or shredded carrots
  • 1-2 tbsp hemp seeds (optional)

Spread miso on the ½ of the nori sheet. Layer the sprouts, avocado, cucumber and carrots on the miso. Roll it tightly.

ani nori wrap

Serve with Sesame Dipping Sauce

  •  1 tbsp nama shoyu or tamari
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil, organic
  • 1 tsp sliced scallions or onions
  • Pinch of cayenne (optional)

Whisk everything together.

What great dishes do you make with seaweed?

These 5 Common Chewing Gum Ingredients Are Linked to Cancer and More

My kids think I’m crazy, but I really think that chewing sugarless (or any) gum will be a taboo like smoking. It’s handed around so freely and bothers me when people offer it to my kids because of the reasons you will read below.

I used to be addicted to chewing gum…Hubba Bubba, Wrigley’s, then sugarless gum like Extra.  I couldn’t figure out why I was always bloated and had headaches…then I started reading…and when you know better you do better.

I quit…and I’ve been off gum for about 15 years…thank you! No easy feat because it used to stop me from eating, calmed my nerves, and freshened my breath. But let me tell you, my stomach thanks me, my brain thanks me….in fact I feel a whole lot better and don’t miss it at all! Continue reading »

Every one loves a strong core – you want that 6-pack, the flat belly – it’s the number 1 request I get in classes! You want to rid yourself of back pain and feel strong throughout your whole body!

Sure, I say because I know that I will be improving your posture, reducing any back pain you may have, provide you with better balance and make breathing easier for you.

Remember though that there is more to your core than the ripples everyone is seeking (well not everyone!).  They are your pelvic floor muscles (love the pelvic tilts we do in Pilates),  the lower back muscles, squeezing your rectum, and all around your midsection (if you want proper anatomy check out another site – I’m keeping this light).

I’ve shown 3 exercises that I love to do in classes. Continue reading »

coconutWhy use coconut oil in your smoothies?

Coconut Oil

Healthy fat that is a highly efficient fuel that helps your body burn fat and create instant energy. Can raise your HDL (good cholesterol) and help to protect you against heart disease. Coconut oil will boost your immune system, plus it’s a natural antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory, making it very effective at combating yeast and parasites.4

Coconut Oil is ideal for dry, rough and wrinkled skin because it contains MCFA’s (medium chained fatty acids) and is easily absorbed by the skin. It prevents stretch marks and lightens existing ones.  Its antiseptic elements keep the skin young, healthy and free from infections.  It’s also an excellent lip balm5.

I keep it in my bathroom, kitchen and a little jar in my purse.

Consuming coconut oil regularly restores thyroid function, often relieves hypothyroidism and actually increase the metabolic rate, leading to weight loss
