kids helping mum cookHow many of you cook your meals from scratch?

How many of your meals are made from some processed food (tomato sauce etc.) and some fresh ingredients?

How much of your eating/cooking has been handed over to corporations?

arrow pointing downSince the 1960’s home cooking has been decreasing and now is being compared to quilting (how many of you are doing that??) It is slowly vanishing and this is a detriment to your health.  BUSY MAMAs and PAPAs show your kids how to make some healthy quick meals that don’t depend on processed foods.

Bring happiness back into your cooking.

dad cooking with kidsTake pride in your home cooked meals.

Food companies are smart and they want our money.  They are using the anxiety/solution strategy to convince us that they should be making our meals.  The marketing tactic of creating anxiety in people and then creating a solution is slowly transforming our diets. We are made to feel (marketed) that home cooking is laborious, creates too much mess, and takes too much time etc, so the solutions of readymade meals and easy to grab processed foods (solution) is the way to go….don’t be fooled.

i love mums cooking signIt has been found that poor women who make their own meals are healthier than rich women who buy processed meals. Hmmmmmm

We recently attended a potluck and I was stunned by the amount of pure crap that was brought. I have never seen so many chips, tortilla chips, store bought desserts & cookies,  pop/juice, store bought meatballs and sauce, simulated bacon bits and more…there were a few salads but most drowning in dressing, a tray of homemade Rice Krispie squares and a homemade lasagna that was devoured in seconds.

clockWe all have the same 24hrs, it’s how we use them that differs…..make a commitment to include more homemade meals into your day and week.  Keep them simple, a boiled egg and steamed veg, a homemade burger (an additional bonus for buying grass fed meat), a salad, a smoothie….what are some of your quick healthy meals to prepare?

Your challenge this week is to limit your intake of processed foods…notice what you put in your grocery cart…and take the extra challenge of only buying less than 5 items of processed food for the week…let me know how you do……stayed tuned for some more details coming up!!!

Are you confused, struggling to make the healthy choice for you and your family, needing a change….. check out I don’t want to be different. But I don’t want to be normal

Check out this video by Michael Pollan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX7kwfE3cJQ

Michael Pollan is an author, activist, journalist and professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. He mainly focuses on the industrial food chain with regards to his research. He emphasizes how cooking is one of the simplest and most important steps people can take to improve their family’s health, build communities, help fix our broken food system and perhaps most importantly, break our growing dependence on corporations. Michael Pollan is a food activist and you can find out more about him and his work by clicking here.

In a part of the video he illustrates how McDonald’s insists on using Russet Burbank Potatoes, a potato in America that is unusually long and difficult to grow. They further insist that their potatoes have no blemishes at all, which is hard because these potatoes commonly suffer from what is referred to as Net Necrosis, which causes unwanted spots and lines on the potatoes. If they have this, McDonald’s won’t buy them and the only way to eliminate this is through the use of a pesticide called methamidophos (Monitor) “that is so toxic that the farmers who grow these potatoes in Idaho won’t venture outside and into their fields for five days after they spray.”

When McDonald’s is ready to harvest their potatoes, they have to put them in giant atmospheric controlled sheds the size of football stadiums because they are not eatable for six weeks. “They have to off gas all the chemicals in them.”

Enjoy watching the video for more information. By the end you will want to be preparing your own food and relying less on processed foods and fast food.

We hear a lot of buzz in the Spring to detox but the Fall is an equally important time to do a cleanse.

fall detox    Why?

It’s a natural time of transition. Use this time to reset your body and mind and prime your system for a winter of wellness. After a playful summer, loosened rules and routines, kickin’ back and relaxing, September is all about action – back into high gear with kids back to school, routines and sports. WHEW, Busy Mama, let’s slow down a little this fall and restore that mind and body of yours with some detoxing.

According to Ayurvedic theory, by the time autumn rolls around we have accumulated plenty of heat in our tissues from the summer and we need to recognize this and deal with it before it turns into mental and physical burnout (which can lead to colds, flues, instability and anxiety…sounds like fun, huh?)

So, what can you do this fall that is different from last fall?

1.  As hard as it may seem, Busy Mama….you need to slow down. Yep, take your foot off the gas pedal. Perhaps go the speed limit and take time to check in with the scenery around you!

Slowing down supports your liver’s natural ability to remove toxins from the body. Remember that the liver is the body’s natural detoxifier (it processes the foods, drinks, drugs, chemicals you breathe and put on your skin etc.). When that liver gets overloaded you can get migraines, rashes, irritable, angry, tired, sick and gain or lose too much weight. I don’t think you want all this TOXIC SLUDGE in your body, so remind yourself to slow down.

What steps can you take to slow down?  Adjusting your habits just a little can have a major impact on your health. Take a moment to write down a few things that you will slow down, for example, how you will relax when you are eating so that you will actually taste your food. Will you notice your breath and where it’s going in your body? Will you take a moment in your day to stretch, walk or do something physically active? Will you learn to say “no” to things you really don’t want to do?

2. What’s going on in that head of yours?

I know a lot of detoxes focus on food, but not the Busy Mama Detox. Besides providing menus and healthy detoxing tips, we know that to be successful you need to be aware of the mumbo-jumbo that’s going on inside of you.  An overactive mind, habitual rushing, multitasking, negative thoughts and more can lead to an overtaxed mind and nervous system which can lead to adrenal fatigue, insomnia, irregular menstrual cycles, indigestions and unwelcome weight gain.

Check in with yourself and see what’s going on upstairs. I know you might want to ignore it, but pull it out, dust it off and get real with yourself. Let your light shine!

 3. Detox your Diet

It’s time to pay attention to what you are putting in your mouth and how it is making you feel. Are you nourishing your body with healthy, cleansing foods?

During the Busy Mama Detox you will gradually make shifts towards healthier eating which will then become habits and part of your normal routine…your Busy Mama Mind & Body will be loving this!!

Try out the 3 day Busy Mama Mini complimentary detox by signing up at www.busymamadetox.com

To get you going, enjoy a glass of water upon waking each and every morning, then indulge in a detoxifying homemade juice or smoothie (skip the dairy and keep it green!! Check out the many recipes at www.tanyamorrison.ca )

4. Why am I doing this?

When you interrupt your normal patterns by cleansing your mind and body, it gives you time for self-reflection.  You become aware of what you are eating and why. Your addictions. Your coping strategies. And more. What is your motivation to start a detox – better health, better sleeps, more energy, a simpler life, more patience – whatever your reason, write it down and use it for intrinsic motivation when the going gets tough. Studies show that extrinsic motivation, like losing weight, will not last, so dig a little deeper than your scale and measuring tape.

I look forward to hearing from you and being a part of the 12 week Busy Mama Detox Program starting Sept 21, 2014. To register email tanya@busymamadetox.com.  Register before Sept 6th and receive a jumpstart on your detox! Refer a friend receive a BONUS gift.

I don’t want to be different. But I don’t want to be normal (which is now overweight* – yikes!)

I feel caught between loving sugar and hating what it does to my mind and body.

I want to pretend that there are no consequences to what I put in my mouth.

I wish that I didn’t get caught up in the chemical reactions caused by eating and wanting more of “that” food.

I wish it weren’t so hard to control the food in my life. Continue reading »

Blood Cleansing Smoothie

The cleaner your blood, the better your health.

spirulinaI mention spirulina in The Busy Mama Detox Program, as it is packed with chlorophyll and aids in the body’s natural detoxing. The key though is that not only does it get toxins out of your cells but it also gets them out of your body and this is key.

Think about dusting your home – dust flies up and while some might be carried away on the cloth or sucked up by the vacuum cleaner, some settles back down on to the surfaces. If we allow toxins to be released without getting them out of our bodies, then we can feel nausea, headaches etc.  It is imperative to get these toxin O-U-T of your system…..as a bonus your fat cells may start to shrink

1 -2 cups water

1 cored apple

1 peeled orange

2 cups raspberries or blueberries

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp spirulina (work up to this amount if needed)

1 tsp stevia or maple syrup or a date, if extra sweetness needed

Add ice cubes, if you like,  if you are not using frozen fruit

My extras that I add in are:

1 tsp matcha green tea powder

1 tbsp 91-1 or Vitamineral greens

Put everything in the blender or Vitamix and let the detoxing begin!

Smoothie Money Saving Tip – Freezing Spinach  and freeze your bananas too!

The Busy Mama Detox Program is so easy to follow.  I don’t feel overwhelmed and it’s comforting to know that I can work at my own pace with Tanya’s guidance.  In one week I have more energy and my pants are looser. Laura – busy mama of 2

Tanya’s knowledge about healthy living is incredible.  She gives realistic advice that is doable and doesn’t leave you feeling like a failure. My skin is clearing up, I’m making better choices when it comes to eating (and I thought I was a healthy eater), and she provides really neat fat burning tips that I’ve never heard of before.  Enjoy this fabulous program.  Rose- busy mama of 2

The Busy Mama Detox is separated into three different programs that you can follow – easy to implement strategies to more involved strategies that you can work up to.  I’m a busy mama of 3 with barely enough time to read it, but Tanya’s layout makes it super easy to follow and her recommendations are the kick in the detox butt that I needed. Melanie –busy mama of 3

I’m a busy grandma and I am thrilled that the Busy Mama Detox also applies to me.  The changes are so simple and effective.  I’m consistently making these tiny changes and they have added up to more energy, mental clarity and looser fitting clothes.  All the other grandma’s are asking me what my secrets are! Laura – busy grand-mama of 4

I went from being constipated to regular bowel movements…do you know how incredible that feels! – Teresa busy mama of 2

Tanya’s Kid Corner Tips are fantastic.  One of her tips has tricked my kids into eating half the sugar they did the week before and they don’t even realize it – Michelle, busy mama of 2

I was out to lunch with my girlfriends and started chatting about The Busy mama Detox. One of my friends told me that she knows a woman whose son was diagnosed at the age of 2 as being mentally challenged and eventually would end up in an institution.  She moved to a new town and sought out a holistic doctor who told her to throw out everything in her fridge and cupboards and to put the family on a strictly raw diet.  That same boy just graduated from a very prestigious HS with honours and says that he knows when he’s not eating properly because his hearing starts to deteriorate.  eg. eating a slice of pizza  Pretty amazing!……Anyway, I’m spreading the word down here and continuing to detox my fridge, cupboards and body! Thank you! – Denise, busy mama of 3

Last year I resigned from making school lunches…well almost….I was the Wednesday lunch maker!  I announced a week before school after giving it much thought that I was retiring.  I mean really, I was making my lunch at the age of 9 and my kids were 9 and 10 last year, so why not follow in my footsteps!

It’s an Ugly Word!! One we never want to hear.

CANCER

Mum and me

Since 2009 I decided to focus a lot of my time researching cancer/disease prevention…and then in March of 2011 I got a call from my mum and she told me that she had mouth cancer.  She decided to start chemo and radiation immediately and it was very difficult to be so far away from her since she lives in Spain.  There are times that she could not talk, she couldn’t eat and was rushed to the hospital several times. Obviously, I booked a ticket to Spain and when I saw her, she looked lifeless and very weak.  She had been given drinks from the hospital to consume for her calories (marconutrients – carbs, fat and protein) but they were not giving her the micronutrients she need for cell rejuvenation that she so desperately needed.

Within two to three days of my mother being on the nutritional plan that I recommended, I cannot begin to tell you how her eyes started to shine, her energy started to increase and her pain subsided.  Her friends were amazed at her recovery. Continue reading »

green smoothie in wine glassI always enjoy the wonderful information provided by Mike Adams of Natural News.  It is true that whatever labels companies can stamp on their products, they will.  Whatever works to entice us to buy them.

It can get overwhelming to walk into a supermarket or health food store these days (especially when about 17,000 new food products are introduced each year) so keep your eyes open for these four superfoods to add to your daily smoothie or meals.

(NaturalNews) Let’s face it: The word superfood has become overused. This title, which was originally intended for foods whose nutritional value considerably exceeded that of the average fruit or vegetable, seems to be attached to almost any natural food these days. Mainstream health magazines are particularly guilty of this abuse, often preferring to use superfood as a marketing term rather than an objective declaration of nutritiousness.

That said, there are a small number of foods that truly deserve to be called superfoods. These tend to be exotic foods that are seldom found in the average Westerner’s home, but which are packed with so many naturally occurring, bioavailable nutrients that they put most multivitamin supplements to shame. This article lists four of the best of them.

moringaMoringa oleifera

Arguably the king of superfoods is Moringa oleifera, a fast-growing Himalayan tree whose leaves are bursting with so much goodness that researchers have nicknamed it “The Miracle Tree” and “The Tree of Immortality.” Moringa leaves contain over 90 different types of nutrients in high quantities, including seven times the vitamin C of oranges, four times the vitamin A of carrots, four times the calcium of milk and three times the potassium of bananas. The leaves are also a complete protein source, since they contain all eight essential amino acids. (1) Given this nutritiousness, it’s unsurprising that studies have linked Moringa consumption to the treatment of diabetesanti-inflammatory diseasescancer and much more.

Moringa powder is easy to purchase online, and makes an excellent natural vitamin and mineral supplement. You might also like to try Ben oil, a sweet-tasting oil made from the tree’s pods that is rich in disease-fighting antioxidants.

Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is a gluten-free food prepared from the young shoots of the wheat plant. It was popularized in the 1930s by the American chemist Charles L. Schnabel, who claimed that 15 pounds of wheatgrass is equal in nutritional value to 350 pounds of regular garden vegetables! (2) While this claim is now considered to be exaggerated, it is true that wheatgrass is one of the most nutrient-dense foods known to science.

According to spectral analysis, a mere 4 grams of wheatgrass powder supplies us with 1,600 percent of our recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin E, 7,000 percent of our RDA of manganese, 15,293 percent of our RDA of riboflavin, 413 percent of our RDA of zinc and similarly astounding concentrations of other essential nutrients. (3) It is also one of the world’s finest sources of chlorophyll, a powerful blood builder and cleaner. This makes wheatgrass a potent detox food as well as a superb nutrient supplement.

Chlorella and spirulina

Chlorella and spirulina are two single-celled algae that thrive in the sunniest parts of freshwater bodies. Though both of them probably qualify as superfoods individually, they become something truly special when consumed together. This is because chlorella and spirulina possess complementary rather than identical nutrient profiles. For example, chlorella tends to contain more chlorophyll and iron than spirulina. Chlorella is also better at chelating heavy metals from the body than spirulina and at repairing cell damage due to its unique growth factor. Spirulina, on the other hand, contains more protein, gamma-linoleic acid (a beneficial fat that is essential for brain function) and cancer-fighting phycocyanin than chlorella. (4) Consequently, consuming these two foods together supplies our bodies with an extremely well-rounded infusion of nutrients — far more than the average fruit or vegetable could possibly provide!

5 Foods to Wean Yourself Off Sugar

This article by Raphael Kellman, M.D, caught my attention because as you may or may not know, I do love my sugar (did).  Something sweet after my meals seals the deal and I hate to admit it, but sugar comes calling my name when I’m feeling tired.  I don’t know why I just don’t have a nap??

Over the years I have definitely upgraded to healthier sweet options such as the raw treats (raw chocolate pudding, Raw Raspberry Cream Filled Chocolate Treats)   I blog about and only consuming home-baked goods.  I had to put some parameters in somewhere so anything store bought is off limits for me!.  I also know that I do like a little sugar and perhaps that is the problem because I don’t want to think that I can’t ever have it again (that makes me crazy and binge – just being honest) – it’s one of life’s treats in moderation.  Think of all the sweetness in fruits, dates, and raw dark chocolate.
