Oh, the shelves are exploding with gluten free products and that is great for those of you who are gluten intolerant…but is it pulling us away from what our bodies are really asking for????….cellular food….

Can we eat gluten free crackers (etc)?

My Answer: WHY???  Just curious…..cuz’ it’s still an unnecessary carb – eat a carrot if you are looking for crunch.

Also, gluten-free is all a marketing buzz right now, same as all-natural, fat free, low fat – have you ever seen any of this printed on the side of a fruit or vegetable??

Sure it’s great to avoid gluten in our diets because grain has been destroyed, altered etc by GMOs, spraying, splicing etc. (don’t take just my word -you can do the research – and listen to your body (bloating, gas, IBS,etc)

I checked out a few labels….hmmm…ask yourself, do I really want to ingest what’s on this label?  Will this stuff feed my cells, or is it feeding my emotions, habits,  if you really want to eat this stuff..…if the answer is yes, then go for it…..your choice.

Glutino Gluten Free cracker ingredient list: INGREDIENTS: First ingredient – sounds yummy doesn’t it…CORN STARCH, WHITE RICE FLOUR, ORGANIC PALM OIL, hmmm, not really into modified myself – how are they modifying it, what are they doing to it, hmm MODIFIED CORN STARCH, DEXTROSE, EGGS, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN, SALT, GUAR GUM, SODIUM BICARBONATE, AMMONIUM BICARBONATE, ROSEMARY EXTRACT.

Mary’s Organic – better choice Ingredients: Organic Short Grain Brown Rice, Organic Whole Quinoa, Organic Brown Flax Seeds, Organic Brown Sesame Seeds, Filtered Water, Sea Salt, Organic Wheat Free Tamari (Water, Whole Organic Soybeans, Salt, Organic Alcohol Or Organic Vinegar). Contains  Soy & Sesame.

carrotA carrot (fresh out of your garden, organic or from your farmer’s market)….. BEST CHOICE – it’s crunchy, it’s real, you can dip it like a cracker…… With this orange crunchy powerfood, you get vitamin A and a host of other powerful health benefits including beautiful skin, cancer prevention, and anti-aging. Vitamin A assists the liver in flushing out the toxins from the body. It reduces the bile and fat in the liver. The fibers present in carrots help clean out the colon and hasten waste movement.

The fall is a beautiful time to be eating carrots and root vegetables.  Try this great Raw Carrot Crackers recipe

If you need to take baby steps, do so.  Getting off the grain-train can be very difficult.  See if you can step onto the veggie-train and pass by the gluten-free train (most of the time).

I will give you straight up answers but trust me; I’ve taken many baby steps.

Do what you can!

How is your liquid day going? Did you get past the “I need to chew” phase? Are you peaceful or a little on edge? What are noticing?

Heading out….be prepared with your mason jars and cooler…no excuses, it’s time to give your digestive system a break and loosen up the impacted waste lining your tissues! Find your local juice/smoothie bar – they are popping up all over the place now.

Be Prepared…whether for just one meal or the whole day.  Know your limits and push when you are ready.  I’d rather you introduce and stick to having one meal replaced by healthy liquids instead of one day, never to repeat.  Slow and steady wins the detox race!

Here’s my cooler bag ready to go!

feet photos 002

Seriously, why are we doing these Thirsty Thursdays?

We all have areas in our bodies that are blocked and the purpose of these liquid days is to proactively hydrate and magnetize waste residues up and out of the cells.  Blocked cells, make up blocked tissue, which makes up blocked organs, which makes YOU BLOCKED UP! You are here to become UNBLOCKED!

You have no idea how much impacted waste you have lining your tissues.  If you could see it, you’d be grabbing the closest scrubber to scrub it off….well…get juicing, drinking green smoothies, detox lemonade, water…this is YOUR scrubber!  This is an important part of the BUSY MAMA DETOX 12 week ON-LINE program that runs in April, September and January. Make your own Thirsty Thursdays by using the recipes that I have on my blog or join in the DETOX (

Hey, I want to know….

What’s your favorite juice or smoothie ? I’d love to hear what you are slurping on!

What’s the easiest part of the liquid day? The hardest part?

Are doing the whole day or a meal (which meal)?

I find the easiest part is drinking these delicious concoctions. The hardest part is around 3-5pm when I feel the need to chew or I’m watching people eat (which, I mean really, I am eating really super nutritious food but it’s that cultural conditioning of having a plate, knife and fork). I also realize how much I sedate myself with munching or use it for a pick me up (Try the 3pm Pick Me Up Smoothie).
Keep up the FANTASTIC daily habits that you are creating – drinking water, detox lemonade, probiotics, enzymes, fruit or juices/smoothies for breakfast….YAHOO ….

image004I would recommend getting a high quality blender such as a Vitamix as it is an important part of detoxing and healthy living.  I have them available on my website and offer free shipping by using this code 06-005828.  Costco sometimes sells them Or check out getting a second hand one at kijiji.  A plain blender is fine but it may not produce the same results…more on this later.

Pick up a juicer at Upayanaturals or Walmart etc.  Jack LaLanne or Breville are great juicers for a reasonable price. Thank you for using my affiliate link to purchase your Healthy Products!

Vitamix – the only blender you will ever need – free shipping 06-005828- thank you for using my affiliate link

Fat Cells Store Toxins

“Did you know that our bodies protect us from toxins by storing them in our fat cells, and in order to allow our body to lose weight, we must reduce the intake of toxins such as pesticides, chemicals, drugs, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil and substances found in processed food. These toxic chemicals are also affecting our hormones and liver functions in charge of metabolism. So instead of reducing calories, reduce toxins to lose weight, regain health and youthfulness and enjoy life.” – The Detox Advisor

The Autumn Detox Cleanse

It’s time to Purge the OLD stuff that’s been sitting around all summer.

I don’t know about you but for some reason the summer hits, the kids are out of school, the routines are loosened and my healthy eating habits take a little hiatus!  You’d think the donning of a bathing suit would keep me in order but the free flowing skirts and tops can make me forget about the snugness of my fall clothes…yikes. More importantly though, after a few weeks of reckless abandonment I feel DISGUSTING, tired, irritable and ready to get back into healthy living.  The key for me is to be aware of the choices I make and the consequences that are rearing their ugly head and to keep shortening this stage until it disappears and I feel SUPER FAB all year long. And that is a whole other blog for another day.

I have posted a plethora of smoothie and juice recipes and this is one area that stays put all year long. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if I didn’t keep this healthy habit going. During the summer, I love picking edible weeds, such as plantains, chickweed, dandelions etc. from my garden and all of my fresh produce and making refreshing juices & smoothies with them.  I get immense pleasure from this habit and it saddens me as my garden begins to dwindle and slowly gets put to rest.

But not to worry, as the leaves change colour and shed, it is a reminder that change is in the air and that we also need to purge.  Including a fall detox into your life may help to stave off seasonal colds, keep your immune system healthy and prepare your organs for the colder months that lie ahead.

According to Health Coach and Integrative Nutrition Specialist Jolene Hart, the fall detox should be all about the lungs and the large intestine. In both alternative and conventional medicine theory, these organs are linked to skin and breathing problems like asthma, eczema, rashes and dry skin—all of the most common things to ail us in the colder months.

To support the lungs and large intestine, Hart recommends limiting sugars, flours, dairy and alcohol for a healthy, mucus-free stomach. Also consume Fenugreek tea (or capsules) to open up the nasal passages. Include warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves into your foods which actually support both intestinal and respiratory health.

fall detox vegFALL DETOX JUICES

For a fall detox cleansing juice, stick with fall fruits and vegetables. Many believe it’s best to have fresh fruit juices in the morning and vegetable juices in the afternoon. Fall foods (organic when possible) to use in your cleansing juices are grapes, apples, beets, leafy greens, and a hint of lemon (but don’t overdo the citrus). Here’s one of my favorite fall detox juice recipes:

1 medium beet

1 large apple

1 cup fresh kale leaves

Place all ingredients in the juicer or blender and process.

image004The Best Purchase I have ever made for my kitchen! This blender will knock your socks off. I know it’s a bit pricey but it is worth every penny.  We use ours 2-3 times per day – way more than my oven!

Pick up your Vitamix today and enter code 06-005828 to receive free shipping!

A few Fall detox meals to add into your healthy rotation. Enjoy foods that warm you and ground you such as squashes and root vegetables. Add earthy spices to your meals. Commit to a plant-based diet to rid your body of excess animals proteins and fats.

It’s time for the grocery cart challenge….

grocery cart with running shoes

Step one – Notice what you are choosing to put in your grocery cart.

Maybe you aren’t ready to let go of some of your processed food items, if so, ask yourself WHY?

Take pictures or at least notice the variety of colours in your cart.

Read labels of everything that goes in your cart…it may not end up in there!

Step two – Limit your cart to 5 or less processed food items

Get picky about what you choose to feed your cells and the cells of your family.

Step three – Where do you buy your food from?

ü  Do you support your local farmers who are raising grass fed beef, bison, chickens etc.?

ü  Do you buy your eggs from a local farmer?

ü  Do you support your famer’s market?

ü  Do you visit your local health food store?

ü  Do you grow your own food in a garden?

ü  Do you sprout?

Step four – Notice any justifications or excuses for the items that you are choosing to put into your cart, which will then go in your mouth..

Is there a healthier choice?

Can I make this from scratch?

Why am I buying it?

Processed foods are too attractive and easy to buy.  If you really want a cake, cookies or other “fatty snack”, make it.  Add love into the process and use real ingredients.

Here is my grocery cart for April 22, 2014.

It wasn’t a big shop today, but 2 loaves of rye bread found their way into my cart.  I must say it is sometimes super hard to not be drawn in by the sales and the recent Easter Candy.

grocery cart

  • The berries and pears will be used for morning fruit or smoothies
  • Bananas will be used with the plain organic yogurt I already have at home with maple syrup (after school snack for my kids.)
  • Oranges will be juiced or eaten whole or used as part of a salad dressing or marinade
  • Green peppers for an omelet later this week and raw veg at some meal
  • Broccoli as a side with wild organic salmon and millet tonight for dinner and as a side at another meal.  I will juice the stems.
  • Squashes because they were on sale and I will either make a butternut soup or have them as a meal
  • Cherry Tomatoes for the Millet Salad I am making for my lunches mixed with lettuce and other greens that I have at home and a Kale- Quinoa Salad that I made.
  • Ginger for smoothies, marinades, tea

Are you confused, struggling to make the healthy choice for you and your family, needing a change….. check out I don’t want to be different. But I don’t want to be normal  or Shopping Cart Detox Part One
