Valentine’s Day is approaching quickly and you may be hearing chocolate calling your name.

I love chocolate and I eat it every day.  Years ago it was Snickers, Skor, and too many to mention! Plus lots of homemade baking with butter, sugar and flour. But I had to change…years of eating like this was affecting my moods, my hormones, my teeth, my waistline and more.

I started experimenting by making tasty treats with raw chocolate and coconut oil. I have used many recipes from various sites and also created some of my own.

So as this Valentine’s rolls around (and then Easter, and then someone’s birthday and of course, the Halloween candy will be lining the aisles soon enough)…try these creations. I promise you will change your taste buds and they will be wanting these treats and not the unhealthy ones!

“My legs are so weak, I can’t squat, I’m giving up.”

“I can’t do push-ups, I’m such a failure.”

“I’m not losing any weight, why bother continuing.”

I’ll start on Monday.”

It’s only a thought and a thought can be changed – Louise Hay

What are you saying to yourself about your workouts or your potential desire to start working out??

Do any of the above thoughts ripple through your mind?

If so, you are sabotaging yourself and any results that you want…honey, you’ve got to flip your thoughts around and start practicing positive self-talk. You’ve got to believe in yourself.

Self-defeating talk leads to poor performance, says Michael Mantell, PhD in Behavior Science for the American Council on Exercise, and I will even add that it sabotages you from even starting.

trying quote

See if you can implement these thoughts into your mind…

“My legs are powerful and allow me to sit, stand, get on and off the toilet, in and out of my car.  I so appreciate my legs and I want to make them even stronger to carry me forward into the years that lie ahead. I’m going to do what I can to continue to strengthen my legs.”

What you tell yourself vibrates throughout your entire body. You are a human being not a failure.  Can you hold yourself in a push up position (on your knees/against a wall – have you tried every option?) and lower yourself 1cm? Then yes, you are beginning to do a push-up.  Instead of giving up, break the exercise or task into its smallest part and start from there. Trust me, we do a lot of this in class…it’s not about the end result..it’s about the journey.

A scale doesn’t measure the weight of your memories or your daily stress, the smiles you display and the lives that you touch, the hours that you sleep, the level of your hormones, the brightness of your future…it just measures your physical mass when you step upon the scale. And for all these reasons and many more, we don’t need a scale to tell us whether to continue to exercise or not……dig deeper than the scale and know that you are performing miracles in your body every time you do something healthy.

The present moment holds the power….right here, right now, sit up straight, take a breath and feel the energy travel up and down your spine, connect with your “tingle”, smile, maybe even squeeze your butt cheeks or stand up and stretch.  Stop thinking that you have to commit to an hour…it’s always the simple things that add up….then you will be wanting to spend more time moving because you become inspired by how this simple exercise makes you feel.  I always tell my clients that the hardest thing is starting, the hardest thing is getting to class…but once you are here…there are never any regrets.

You are stronger than any excuse

You are more powerful in the present moment

You are a magnificent human being capable of magnificence

Sending you the energy to believe in yourself,

Tanya

Precession

hanging around bee by flowerHow can you compare living an active and healthy life to that of a bee?

Precession is the effect of bodies in motion on other bodies in motion. This term was made famous by Dr. R Buckminster Fuller. Let’s use one of his famous stories to explain precession:

Seemingly inadvertently, the honey-bee goes about his business of gathering honey (what you think may be the main objective). Precessionally, at ninety degree’s to his body and his flight path, his legs gather pollen from one flower and “accidentally “ take this pollen to the next flower, resulting in cross pollination. The outcome of this seemingly inadvertent accidental activity is that the bee contributes enormously to life on earth (the most important outcome). Of the 100 crop species that provide 90 per cent of the world’s food, over 70 are pollinated by bees.

Your main goal is to live an active and healthy life and in doing so you inadvertently affect many things around you:

  • Your family sees you working out and you inspire them to health (health reduces health care costs, etc.)
  • Your friends see you eating healthily and you inspire them
  • You choose foods that are healthy, whole foods (not packaged) therefore reducing package waste which helps with the environment etc.
  • You choose foods from your farmer’s markets because they are healthy & fresh and this again has multiple effects (you help the farmer, you cut down on transportation costs, you help the environment, you support your local economy etc.)
  • You choose skin care products or household cleaners without chemicals and this effects the quality of your water (no chemicals going down your drain tainting the water supply and nature and animals) and the air that you breath
  • You choose foods that are non GMO and this affects the bees, insects, animals, our land etc.

I could go on, but you can see that your main objective to be active and healthy affects more than you could ever know. Even though you may not even know of the exact consequences of your actions, be sure that you are affecting very positive change to those around you.
image001If you drop a stone into water, you get the ripples going out at ninety degree’s to the direction of the dropped stone. Your actions to be active and healthy are so powerful. Now on the flip side, perhaps you don’t work out, you eat packaged processed foods, you choose to buy products with nasty chemicals, etc.….you too are having an effect on your family, friends and environment. Can you imagine changing just one little thing?  I often hear people say,”how can changing one little thing make a difference”, and I hope that today you realize the power that you actually have.

‘Nothing happens until something moves.” – Albert Einstein

Don’t let fear paralyze you. Begin today to make the smallest changes possible. If you are a pop drinker – change one drink per day to water, then when you are ready, change a whole day. If you haven’t been moving, do one squat, one tippy toe raise, then consciously make it two the next day. For precession to be most powerfully evident, motion is essential, and considered motion even more effective.

If you’ve seen the animated Bee Movie you’ll have an even better understanding of the importance of precession. If not, rent it and watch it with your kids – it’s a great movie.

“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” – Albert Einstein

Precession is ALWAYS at work; all that differs is the end result. Are you either  inspiring others to live a healthier life or you aren’t.

Many of you are already causing ripples of positive change by reading my monthly newsletters, coming to class and/or taking the Busy Mama Detox.

Just imagine how many more people we can help and inspire to be healthy just by doing so ourselves! As Mahatma Gandhi once  famously said, “We must be the change we wish to see in the  world.”

By improving your own health, you ARE improving the health of those around you and the health of our planet!

Healthy Hugs,

Tanya

Become a Fat Loss Furnace

Joan holding up her pantsDo you want to burn more fat when you work out?  Are you tired of pinching more than an inch? Well, you too, can be like my clients and melt away the inches! 5 years and counting for Joan- yahoo!!!

Well, let’s turn up the heat and maximize the efficiency of your workout and start melting your fat away.

Repeated intense exercise (think short bursts of exercise such as skipping, jumping, sprinting, lifting heavy weights, etc.) increase the size of a cell’s mitochondria, which is its fat-burning furnace. By adding these exercises into your workout routine you can increase the size of your mitochondria (powerhouses of your cells) by a whopping 35% which means you are making a larger furnace to burn more fat. Mindful Weight Loss

be aware

It’s mid-January and unfortunately most post-holiday New Year’s resolutions (92%) have gone by the wayside.  Perhaps you are hanging on, but studies show and I have seen it countless times with people…they either:

  • Give up on their goal because it’s based on perfection (I will never eat that again. I will work out every day)
  • Have a goal that starts with guilt (I shouldn’t have done that, so now I’m going to so this)
  • Have a goal that’s way too vague (I’m going to lose weight, I’m going to stop smoking)
  • Believe that attaining their goal will make them happy (If you do make your goal…then what? Unfortunately most people fall back into previous routines and gain the weight back. WHY? Because we know we can achieve the goal and now we are certain we can do it again, but don’t because we know we can…does this sound familiar?? Also, reaching a goal does not make you eternally happy.)

How about reframing your goals, such as:

Creating daily intentions:

  1. I am finding ways to eat that help me lose weight
  2. I am keeping track of what I am eating
  3. I am tracking my exercise
  4. I am noticing how often I lose my patience and seek immediate gratification
  5. I am noticing how lack of sleep or stress affects what I put in my mouth
  6. I am excited about finding ways to increase my energy

These intentions are framed for success not failure because you are not breaking anything – you are simply observing, paying attention and making choices in the moment. These intentions will bring you into the PRESENT moment to start consciously paying attention to what is happening NOW.

Every moment is a choice…nothing starts on Monday, because it’s happening now. Let go of guilt and self-sabotage, rather allow acceptance and love into your daily adventure and intentions.

You definitely kick started me into being more mindful of the things that are under my control.

Tanya and I worked together for a few months and then I moved away.  When we started I weighed about 175 lbs. Since I moved, I’ve continued to learn more about nutrition, sleep and moving my body and keeping on the path we discussed. I am now down to 145 lbs, eating better, sleeping better and much more active. Thanks for giving me that push to really start THINKING about what I was doing. Mindfulness has been a real saviour to improving my health. Thank you, Carolyn R.

New Year, New Message….Maintain Don’t Gain

A recent Gallup poll said that 51% of people want to lose weight but only 25% are seriously committed to making the changes necessary.  So if you are in the 25% – super – make long lasting changes void of quick fixes and empty promises, if you are in the 26% that want to lose weight and are hoping magically that it will happen….well, focusing on maintaining your weight may be a better choice.

I have worked with clients for the last two decades and to lose weight takes A LOT of commitment & dedication. Some of my clients have lost upwards of 60lbs and kept it OFF (that’s key!) Some clients have lost a significant amount of weight and still should lose more for health reasons, but have MAINTAINED their weight loss for 2+ years – this is FANTASTIC.  And some clients have stayed the same weight but are stronger, leaner and healthier (less aches and pains).

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.” – Mark Twain

Typically when we get stressed the wheels start spinning and life can feel like it’s whirling at top speed.  We tend to feel like a Jack Russell ripping around a room, rushing at the problem.  What if we took a deep breath and approached the situation carefully like a St. Bernard? Or perhaps you do already…

“The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.” – Abraham Lincoln

Watch your Thoughts thoughts

“I Can’t have THAT

It’s Bad for Me

It’s a Cheat Day

I’m on a Diet

I Can’t do that

This is Hard”

Any of them sound familiar?

Everything starts as a thought. EVERYTHING, from the desk you are sitting at, to the car that you drive, to the dinner you will serve tonight. What you think, you cause to appear in your life.

You are always planting thought seeds and they will grow, some now, some next week, others in a year. Your mind is a complex machine and you need to be aware of the language of your thoughts as they are the life you are living today.

Why can’t you have THAT?

You can but it may make you feel less energetic, bloated, it may conflict with your long term goal, etc. The thing is, you can have it; but you may choose not to have it…very different thought process. Lack vs. Abundance.

MondayAre you saying, “I will start on Monday.”?

If so, you are caught in the DIET trap.  Adopting a healthy lifestyle frees you from start and end dates.  It is a process.  It is about making small changes that stick today and every day. Remember your amygdala (commit to teeny tiny changes). Don’t know about your amygdala and its power – google it or join the Busy Mama Detox to diffuse it.

That’s bad for me. Is it?

There are healthier food choices than others but to label foods this way is part of the diet mentality and it also puts negative energy into your food choice.  If you only eat bananas, it can become an unhealthy choice because you are not eating a variety of healthy foods, but bananas are good for you.  People label all “Fat” as bad, but without the healthy fats, you’d be dead (little extreme but you get the point), and with too much fat (and especially the wrong kind) you can be unhealthy.

When you eat something that’s not a 10/10 on the nutrition scale but you really want it, eat it (just not every day all the time). Embrace it with joy, eat it with love, don’t smoother it with guilt.

I can’t do THAT? This is HARD.

Why, what’s holding you back from doing what you want…dig a little deeper and find out.  You deserve what you want…do you know what you want?

better focusMake sure to write down your goals and inspirations.  Read them to keep you motivated.

We THRIVE with Rules, not a lot but we do like them! They help with structure, with flow, and ease of routine. They become your habits. What are your rules?

Here are some of my Simple EVERY DAY Rules that may help with your success:

Water upon rising                                       Detox lemonade

Juice or smoothie for breakfast                Salad or veggies before or as my meal

Move my body                                             Healthy fats with my meals

Connect with my breath

Notice the choices that I make and the consequences. Realize if I want to keep repeating the consequences, if not, then change the choice!

Were these always my rules….NO….but I can honestly say that in my mid 40’s I feel better than I ever have.  I am rarely bloated, I have sooooo much energy, I’m happy, light, I feel a sense of freedom, my moods are softer, and I have more patience just to mention a few.  I truly believe with every cell in my body that it’s because of the thoughts of wanting to live the healthiest life possible with an abundance of energy.  I want to THRIVE as I get older.  Those thoughts translate into fueling my body with food infused with love (homemade), health (energetic) and gratitude.  I move my body because it feels good and I want to always be able to MOVE. I work out my hands, fingers, feet and toes as much as I do my abs.

May you be blessed with an abundance of thoughts that plant the seeds of the things that you want to grow in your life.

Healthy Hugs, Tanya

New Year Detox Part Two – Drinking, Stress, Shut Eye and Supplements

It’s a new year and for many that means a renewed focus and interest in self-improvement, including detoxing from the recent holidays.  While wanting to be in good health year round is your priority…we all need a reminder and a tune up from time to time and the New Year is a great reminder to detox our cells and improve our health…because as you know – without good health, we are nothing.

new year_Healthy

So, all year long, we move our bodies at Move Your Body Studio in Bobcaygeon and 3 times per year, the Busy Mama Detox, which is an online detox program available world-wide is offered.  This 12 week program breaks down your day into small parts and offers you strategies to detox that little area…until your whole day is cleaned up.  Small changes…BIG rewards. Check out www.busymamadetox.com for more info!!

Check out New Year Detox Part One- Eating and Moving

Here are a few more strategies for your short and long term health…

water_glassHydration — Plain and simple, we need water!!! Start your day with a big glass of water and follow it up with a detox lemonade (water and lemon)

Many minor maladies such as headaches, fatigue, muscle cramps and even depression can be related to your hydration levels.  WOW – water is powerful!!

Keep your body hydrated with green  and herbal teas, water, coconut water but leave the nasties out of your body like alcohol, caffeine, sodas, store bought juices…you don’t need your cells floating around in artificial colours, flavours, preservatives…keep your choices CLEAN.

Stress – Breath, chill, take a moment, be in the moment, relax, step back & laugh. Stress can cause a buildup of toxins in your body which can be very dangerous. Even minor daily activities like commuting, finances and relationships cause us stress.  Seek out ways to reduce stress in your life and take counter measures to reduce them.

Sleep – Yup, you’ve got to get it.  Your body heals, your brain detoxes and you awake renewed and replenished.  The Busy Mama Detox offers many suggestions that can help you improve this important area of your life.

Supplements – I was never a big fan of supplements but I do believe they have a place in our modern day diet now.  Consuming a healthy diet may feel like a full time job and the food industry does not help us with all their inventions, so our cells need HELP.

It can be challenging to come by all the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals our bodies require, and supplements are a great way to do just that — supplement our intake.

Here are some supplements that are discussed in the Busy Mama Detox.  You are to use what you feel is necessary for this time of your life.

These will ensure that you are killing off parasites, yeast & pathogens.

ü  Body brush (I use dry brushes from Living Libations which I highly recommend and the Lymph+Tonic lymphatic drops)

ü  Probiotics – great for the bowel & intestinal flora

ü  Oil of oregano – antimicrobial

ü  Fenugreek Seed Capsules – mucus dissolver and fat dissolver

ü  Colloidal Silver – anti-fungal/bacterial

ü  Candex – anti-fungal enzyme blend

ü  Scram by HealthForce Nutritionals  – anti-parasitic

ü  Pau d’Arco tea – anti-fungal

ü  Grapefruit Seed Extract – antimicrobial & anti-pathogenic

ü  Aloe – great for the bowel

ü  Tryphala – Ayurvedic product that strengthens and supports bowel

ü  Chlorophyll –synthesized sunlight

ü  Cell Food – liquid oxygen

ü  CoQ10 & Resveratrol – increase the oxygenation in the cells

ü  Chinese Herbs by Dragon Herbs (chose appropriate supplements according to personal needs)
