Getting off the Sugar

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I am asked. How can I stop eating sugar?

Many people think because they are not eating “candy” that they are not eating sugar. That’s not TRUE. Sugar lurks everywhere and we are eating & drinking way too much of it.

Besides the obvious – sugar and anything ending in “ose” or artificial sweeteners or anything sweet (expect stevia – which is an herb). You’re an intelligent person – you know where sugar is!!! Breads, pasta, juice, pop, alcohol, pastries, muffins, packaged & prepared foods, oatmeal, chips, potatoes, some fruits and veggies, condiments and on & on (just in case I left any out). What is beneath your sugar and caffeine cravings?

When you desperately feel like you need a cup of tea or a cup of coffee or some sort of sugar (it doesn’t mean dipping your hand in a bag of skittles, it could, but it also means wanting bread, pasta, muffin, cookies, chocolate, sweets, alcohol, pop, juice and anything that is calling your name that has sugar in it)

What are you feeling? Are you tired, stressed, frustrated, feel like you deserve a reward, etc. Label it and own it.

Sit with it & feel it in your body. Listen to your mental chatter? Are you trying to make deals with yourself?  Just a little bit. No one will know. Who I am kidding, I can’t do this. Does it matter if I only have a little bit? I didn’t have any yesterday. I’ve been good. I have a headache and feel jittery – I’ll just have a bit to take the edge off. I need the caffeine to keep going. I’ll just have a small one? I really can’t live without it. I don’t want to deal with the detox symptoms. I’m never not going to have sugar or caffeine again, so throw in the towel and give in. Continue reading »

Busy Mama Muffin Dilemma

So I went at Tim Hortons the other day, it was that or sit at an arena. I had been running around all day in the dreary days of a grey and cold winter day and I was having that afternoon crash.

I’m not a regular at Tim Hortons which is evidenced by the fact that it took me about 5 minutes to order my cup of tea. Anyway this afternoon crash prompted a stare down between me and the muffin display. The “afternoon crash” voice inside my head was all over me having a sugary muffin that would take me on a sugar ride and pump me up, up, up. The voice of “afternoon crash reason” knew this was not the right choice because it reminded me of the eminent sugar crash & the unfulfilling pleasure I would receive from a factory made muffin. tomatoesCan I nibble on blueberries and cherry tomatoes throughout my day?

Even though these are healthy choices, my simple answer is NO. But why, if it’s healthy food?

Eating when you are not hungry is not helping you if you need to lose weight, fat and inches. It’s important to tune into your hunger signals and you can’t do that if you are constantly munching. Read here to learn about true vs. toxic hunger.

If your body is always digesting food, it does not have time to do the deeper work of healing (which is important for your health).   Blueberries and tomatoes are a source of carbohydrates (which is sugar), so all day you are feeding your body with sugar. Continue reading »

Often times my client say, “if I exercise more I can eat more right.”

Depends …what’cha eating???

If you’re thinking breads, pastas, muffins, fries, chips, cookies etc. (you get the idea–the processed stuff – which they usually are) the answer is, “Depends on what your goals are.”

If you want to feel like the Pillsbury Dough Boy or you don’t mind extra padding on your body or low energy, then by all means, gobble them up.

If you want the fat to melt away, the pounds to drop and your energy to soar, then the best thing is to focus on upping your greens, vegetables with some nuts, seeds and fruit.

It’s not the simple case of just eating less or eating more but rather what you’re eating that determines the quantity. Continue reading »
