Oh, here it comes again…that afternoon drowsiness – quick, give me a pick me up, aka- sugar, caffeine – to artificially keep me going…STOP, there is a better way.

For most of us, the cause of mid-day sleepiness (its more sleepiness than actual tiredness/fatigue) is eating too much sugar or carbohydrates around breakfast and not eating enough healthy fats. A sugary morning leads to a quick burst of energy for a few hours followed by a crash in energy levels. During the Gain Energy Lose Fat sessions, everyone tasted a sample of a blended drink and loved it. We talked about why we need fat, and also what is at the root of your fat storage. Starting your day off one way or the other can put you in fat burning mode or fat storage mode…what’s your choice?

  1. Start your morning with this drink: Mix a half teaspoon of a high quality pink Himalayan salt in a large glass of water first thing in the morning and drink the whole thing. This helps your adrenals get started. This will not contribute to high blood pressure, and it will reduce adrenal stress. I like to add the salt to my detox lemonade.
  2. Next, have one of these drinks and notice if you are still experiencing your afternoon slump…..these also keep you in fat burning mode, not fat storage mode. Scared to add fat to your tea…I was..check out my adventure


Blended Coffee: 2 cups brewed coffee (go for the organic & fair trade), 1 tbsp MCT or Brain Octane oil (or ghee, or both), ¼ c full-fat coconut milk (optional), 1 tbsp grass-fed collagen (optional and more on this later). Blend in your vitamix for at least 1 minute.

Blended Tea: 2 cups brewed tea, 1-2 tbsp MCT or Brain Octane oil, ghee, coconut oil (combo or single), 1 tsp organic vanilla powder (optional), 2-3 drops stevia (optional), organic cinnamon (optional). Blend in your vitamix for at least 1 minute

Blended Cacao Tea: 2 cups tea, 2 tbsp coconut or Brain Octane oil, 1 tbsp coconut butter, 1 tbsp cacao powder, 3 drops stevia


  1. Add healthy fats and protein to your first meal of the day. MCT oil in your smoothie, eggs and avocado, etc.

Remember this is YOUR BODY. Experiment with it and see what works for YOU. If you are loading up on carbs for breakfast (which also keeps you in fat storage mode), make a change and notice your afternoon energy. Take note of your sleeping patterns, maybe you need a nap, or more sleep, or some movement.

Another tip to avoid the afternoon slump is to feed your cells the proper nutrition. We need 7-15 servings of vegetables a day and most of us are getting 1.5 – not good! Instead we tend to pump ourselves up with sugar and caffeine to keep us going.  Simple solution…bridge the gap.
