Can you identify with the following story? I kinda hope not…

Our family had eaten dinner at 4:30pm and then the kids and Glen went to hockey practice. I thought I’d bake since I hadn’t made anything in a while. But then poof! I lost control. I was tired and instead of giving myself permission to relax I slipped into an old habit. It started with a piece of Halloween candy – just a tiny innocent KitKat. I snapped and went into a trance. Eight chocolate finger cookies, 2 brown cows, banana bread batter, chocolate chip cookie batter, chocolate chips and then the cookies when they came out of the oven. Yikes! What just happened in the span of 40 minutes? And why did I feel the need to bake after eating finger cookies and brown cows? (Remember that sugar also comes in the form of chips, popcorn, pop, juice, pasta, bread, packaged goods, etc.)

I couldn’t move and I thought I would stop because my stomach was going to explode. But even then I managed to eat a slice of banana bread, because, like, isn’t the best time to eat it is when it comes out of the oven?

When everyone came home I was so stuffed I could hardly move. I wasn’t used to this self-sabotaging behaviour that I have been working to erase from my life. Besides feeling like a Beluga whale was in my tummy, I was also snippy and short on patience. My feet started to burn and within 30 minutes I had a headache from the sugar rush. I also noticed that I was burping and tooting (a side effect due to the sugar fermenting in my stomach). I was dead tired – but wasn’t I trying to give myself a quick fix to keep me going?

I put the kids to bed and then I told Glen that I was going downstairs to work out. After an hour on the treadmill and some energizing music, I was still tooting, and now my stomach felt like a beach ball, but at least I know it was better than sitting on the couch and groaning. Also, I had to hide the pent up frustration of having to keep this secret from my family.

If you can identify and relate to this story, guess what? Yes, you can say it! Admitting you have a problem is the first step. Say it with me: “I am addicted to sugar.” Or at least I am addicted to mindless munching!

You need to understand this – sugar addiction is very powerful.

“Being addicted to sugar and flour is not an emotional eating disorder,” says Dr. Mark Hyman, author of The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet. “It’s a biological disorder, driven by hormones and neurotransmitters that fuel sugar and carb cravings — leading to uncontrolled overeating. It’s the reason nearly 70 percent of Americans and 40 percent of kids are overweight.”[1]

Minutes after I start eating a sugary food, I feel a rush of euphoria and I can’t stop. Then comes the crash where I either have to get more to sustain that feeling or the downward spiral starts, the mood turns sour, and I wish I hadn’t even had a bite. Note to self: Don’t have it in the house!

The good news is that you don’t have to be governed by your sugar cravings. But first you have to recognize you have a problem. Maybe it’s time to challenge some of your beliefs. Maybe it’s time to take a good look at the contents of your suitcase.

Stay tuned for next Tuesday– Do you have a mild, moderate or severe sugar addiction?
