Fat Loss Friday

This is an excerpt from the Busy Mama Detox, an on-line or in person program offered by me…

If you want to keep fat on your body then stay on this roller coaster……

  • Skip meals (under eat)
  • Overeat
  • Eat lots of sugar (alcohol, candy)
  • Eat lots of processed foods (cakes, cookies, muffins, breads, pasta)
  • Eat carbs in the morning

Doing these things will cause a sharp spike in your insulin levels and this SHUTS OFF your FAT BURNING potential and you enter FAT STORAGE MODE. Continue reading »

We want those TOXINS O-U-T, out

 Full moon=replenishment=minerals in ->Sunday January 24, 2016

Every Full moon represents an energetic peak, which shines a powerful light on whatever is coming full-circle in your Life. Take this time to ground yourself, disengage from drama and restore your zest for life.

During the full moon the body will more readily absorb minerals and heal. You can work with these natural rhythms of the moon to optimize which results you want.

The waxing moon and full moon are times when things are birthing and coming to fruition while the waning moon is a releasing moon.

Prepare yourself for Sunday January 24- this is the day your body really absorbs what you put it in ….real living food or dead processed food…choose wisely today!

What will you do on Sunday to assist the detoxing of your cells?

  • Start the day with water, detox lemonade, herbal tea, green juice drink, detox broth
  • Have homemade juices/detox broth throughout the day or very light meals
  • Dry Brush before your shower or upon rising

The skin is responsible for eliminating 1/3 of the body’s waste everyday – that can equal up to one pound!!! A super fast and effective way it to add dry brushing to your shower/bath routine.

dry brushesDry Brushing

Whether you use a natural bristle brush, a dry brushing mitt, a cheap loofah glove (I’ve tried them all and have finally found the VERY BEST from Living Libations which all my clients love as well), give your body a scrub and:

  • Loosen the dead cells to allow the toxins a quick and clear exit out of your skin!
  • Leave your skin SOFT and GLOWING
  • Reduce CELLULITE
  • Stimulate your immune system
  • Wake up your circulation
  • Move your lymph
  • And so much more!

Start at your feet and work up to your chest, then work down from your head and neck to your chest. The key is to make it FUN and a part of your day! Then jump in the shower or bath!

logo123When it comes to Dry Brushing, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Living Libations. I use their dry brushes and lymph+ tonic as part of my routine before jumping in the shower or bath. Recently I have started to also dry brush upon rising – it just feels so good!

Detox Bath

While dry brushing, pour yourself a hot water bath with one-two cups of Epsom salts (or more) and ½- 2 cups of non-aluminum baking soda.

Soak for 20-40 minutes with lights dimmed, perhaps a candle for added relaxation and soft music to drown out any “mama calling from your kids or husband”

For an added cleansing effect, drink a cup of peppermint tea before the bath to promote the release of toxins or even add it to your bath along with soothing essential oils like lavender or chamomile.

Why Epsom Salts & Baking Soda?

  • Safe, natural, non-toxic traditional remedies used to improve well-being
  • Believed to cleanse and purify the body
  • Relieve joint pain and slow down the aging process
  • Epsom salts provide the body with much needed magnesium and sulfates
  • Baking soda neutralizes acids (meats, sugar, processed foods, alcohol, medication, etc.) and promotes the elimination of toxins leaving you feeling refreshed and renewed, not to mention your skin will be oh so soft!

Note: If you are TOXIC, and those nasties are trying to escape your mama cells, you might be dizzy after your bath…so get up gently and take some deep cleansing breaths!

FYI on sulfates….they disinfect your blood and flush toxins O-U-T of your cells. They are also necessary for the synthesis of new collagen…you got it…gives you healthier, younger looking MAMA skin!!!

Go get your Epsom Salts!!!

Other detox bath ideas that you can explore….

  • Austrian Moor Mud – nature’s most potent healing compounds
  • Himalayan Salt
  • Organic Seaweed – help delay aging process
  • Add ginger or ginger tea to further sweat those toxins out (can add to Epsom/baking soda)
  • Add fresh herbs – mint warms you, lavender and chamomile soothe you, explore and find what suits your mood
  • Bentonite clay – fast detox method
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar – super helpful when you need to restore the acid/alkaline balance back to your body

Madeleine Marentette from Grail Springs in Bancroft (great place) has written a book, Grail Springs Holistic Detox for Body, Mind and Spirit, and I love her advice about detoxing with the cycle of the moon.

If you can manage to follow this you may deepen your detox even more, here is what she writes in her book…The rhythm of a new moon supports weight loss and detoxification.

Google the moon cycles and then add the dates into your day timer and see if you can follow her advice.  If not, any time you can have a detox bath, jump in!

Full moon=replenishment=minerals in ->Monday February 22nd, 2016

New moon = detox = toxins OUT -> Monday February 8th, 2016

During the full moon the body will more readily absorb minerals and heal. You can work with these natural rhythms of the moon to optimize which results you want.

According to Sarah Best’s article, “How to Get the Most out of your Detox”, a complete circuit from one full moon to the next takes a month and is divided into two roughly 14-day phases: waxing moon and waning moon, the latter being the best time for detoxing. If this sounds bizarre to you, consider that the gravitational pull of the moon governs the tides of the planet’s oceans and has done since the beginning of time. When we remember this, it is not such a leap to accept that this same force exerts a powerful influence on the flow of fluids into and out of our cells.

In the words of Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe in their book Moon Time: “The waning moon detoxifies and washes out, sweats out and breathes out, dries, consolidates, prompts to action and the expenditure of energy.” During the waxing moon, conversely, the body is better at taking in than it is at letting go. Whenever you have any choice in the matter – i.e. unless a health crisis means you must start immediately – always schedule your longer detoxes to happen when the moon is waning. You will get much better results.

As you’re lying down on your mat feel the sensation of being held up, carried, and supported by whatever surface you are laying on.

Surrender completely to the embrace of gravity, and let go into the mat and let it do the work. Sometimes it can feel like you’re floating, and that can be very pleasant and increase your motivation for taking up residence in your body and in the present moment.

Join me for meditation & mindfulness during Core Conditioning Tuesday’s at 9am & Saturdays at 8:45am

Surrendering your body to gravity can entrain the mind into the spirit of what you might call unconditional surrender, not to some external threats to your well-being, but to a full inhabiting of the present moment, independent of any conditions you may find yourself in. ln practicing dropping into the embrace of gravity itself, you are more motivated and more willing to drop unconditionally into the now, to bring a radical and open-hearted acceptance to whatever you find is going on in your mind or body and in your lives in any given moment on any given day. Take this time to let be and let go.

As you lie in corpse pose or whatever position is comfortable for you, give yourself over to the present moment and to the life expressing itself in you now. Open up to the richness of this moment.

Every posture has its own unique energies and challenges, and every posture is a perfect posture for meeting the present moment of wakefulness and self-compassion.

Watching your thoughts

Take a moment to dwell in the watching of your thoughts and the emotional charges that they carry, whether positive, negative, or neutral, whether relatively strong or relatively weak, featuring them center stage in the field of awareness while you let all the other aspects of the present moment received into the background.

Honor your awareness, your mindfulness. Notice what is in your mind and honor how necessary and important it is to the cultivation and deepening of awareness and non-attachment. Remind yourself that you can rest in awareness with any object of attention, the breath, various aspects of the body, with sensations and perceptions, the myriad thoughts and feelings that flux through your mind, or in a vast, boundless, choiceless, open awareness beyond all doing and just be the knowing that is awareness itself.

Drop into this moment as it is and rest in awareness, outside of time, discerning from moment to moment how things actually are.

Lying down in meditation can change your whole orientation toward the moment and the day and what is transpiring. It can slow down or stop the forward momentum of your head and all its driveness and help you to recalibrate and be more embodied in whatever you are dealing with. It can enlarge your view of your own mind and body in that moment and how you are responding to what is going on.

When lying down, such as just before falling asleep or upon waking, is a great opportunity to practice mindfulness, being in the moment, a time to discover hidden dimensions of your own life and new possibilities for learning and growing, for healing and for transformation, nested right inside the present moment. Sit back and be aware of the possibilities and insights that are much more likely to emerge when you are willing to show up and be with whatever is arising.

Coming to Our Senses – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Oct 042015

It is always now. The reality of your life is always now. And to realize this you will see, is liberating. In fact, I think there is nothing more important to understand if you want to be happy in this world.

Join me for meditation & mindfulness during Core Conditioning Tuesday’s at 9am & Saturdays at 8:45am

But we spend most of our lives forgetting this truth; overlooking it, fleeing it, repudiating it. And the horror is that we succeed. We managed to avoid being happy while struggling to become happy, fulfilling one desire after the next, vanishing our fears, grasping at pleasure, recoiling from pain, and thinking, interminably, about how best to keep the whole works up and running. As a consequence, we spend our lives being far less content then we might otherwise be. We often fail to appreciate what we have until we have lost it. We crave experiences, objects, relationships, only to grow bored with them. And yet the craving persist.

There is nothing spooky about mindfulness. It is simply a state of clear, non-judgemental, and undistracted attention to the contents of consciousness, whether pleasant or unpleasant. Cultivating this quality of mind has been shown to reduce pain, anxiety and depression; improve cognitive function; even produced changes in gray matter density in regions of the brain related to learning and memory, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.

The Buddha described four foundations of mindfulness, which he taught as “the direct pass for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and limitation, for the disappearance of pain and grief, and for the attainment of the true way”. The four foundations of mindfulness are the body (breathing, changes in posture, activities); feelings (the senses of pleasantness, unpleasantness and neutrality; the mind (its moods and attitudes); and the objects of mind (which include the five senses but also other mental states such as volition, tranquility, rapture, equanimity, and even mindfulness itself).

There is nothing passive about mindfulness. Being mindful is not a matter of thinking more clearly about experience- it is the act of experiencing more clearly, including the arising of thoughts themselves. Mindfulness is a vivid awareness of whatever is appearing in one’s mind or body – thoughts, sensations, moods – without grasping at the present or recoiling from the unpleasant. Simply pay attention to the flow of experience in each moment.

The principal enemy of mindfulness – or of any other meditative practice – is the deeply conditioned habit of being distracted by thoughts. The problem is not thoughts themselves but the state of thinking without knowing that we are thinking. In fact, thoughts of all kinds can be perfectly good objects of mindfulness. Most people who believe they are meditating are merely thinking with their eyes closed. By practicing mindfulness, one can awaken from the dream of discursive thought and begin to see each rising image, idea, or bit of language vanish without a trace. What remains is consciousness itself, with its attendant sights, sounds, sensations and thoughts appearing and changing in every moment.

With practice, mindfulness becomes a well-formed habit of attention, and the difference between it and ordinary thinking will become increasingly clear. Begin to feel fully immersed in each moment of your life.

mre-TheKetoBeginning-300x250_01Friday Fat Loss Tip #1

You can’t achieve your outcome (goal) if you don’t consistently change a behaviour.

One area we focus on during any of the healthy programs that are offered (Busy Mama Reboot, 10 Day Detox, Holistic Weight Loss/Management) is adding healthy fats to our diets. One change could be adding a fish oil supplement, an avocado to your salad, some hemp/chia seeds to your breakfast or making fat lattes – which my clients LOVE!

The important point is to make one change only and make it a habit before you start adding more habits because then you are more likely to stop doing everything!

We’ve been told for years that eating fat will make us fat…but that is not true. Today there are more low fat/no fat products than ever before and our population is getting more obese by the mouthful.

I bet that you might even be afraid to eat more fat during your day…I know I was. To start my morning with oil added to my morning routine does not sound inviting or productive, but let me tell you, in days I could see the fat melting from my waist and thighs. (Also, my energy went up, my cravings went down and the spikes in my mood leveled out). I have also consciously starting adding more healthy fats to each meal and snack.

How did I start this new adventure?

For years I have been consuming MCT oil or coconut oil during the day but never in the morning (such as added to my smoothies, cooking with it or a tablespoon before a meal—because I know the brain is 60% fat and good fats are required for healthy living). After reading the Bulletproof Diet by Dave Asprey, I started to add his brand of Brain Octane to my morning tea (plus his collagen)…this translated into a inches lost from my butt and waistline, a softening of my afternoon slump and my sugar cravings decreasing.

Then I stumbled upon healthfulpursuit.com and loved what holistic nutritionist Leanne Vogel was saying and bought her e-book, The Keto Beginning: Complete Guide +30-day Meal Plan…which has 17 chapters, 147 pages + over 70 high-fat, low-carb, moderate-protein, dairy-, gluten-, sugar-, grain-, legume-free recipes. It’s the rocket fuel for achieving flawless health and effortless weight loss through sound nutrition practices and vibrant food preparation in ways you’ve never seen before.

It has further expanded my knowledge about nutrition and it is definitely worth the read. You can pick up a copy here…..

Which brings me to today…Your Fat Loss Friday Tip….What behaviour change can you make to add more healthy fat into your diet?? If one is making a fat latte, then check out these super recipes.

If you can’t seem to sort out what to do, then email me at tanya@moveyourbody.ca for Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching and I will be more than happy to chat with you.

In the meantime…enjoy this Turbo Fat Charge Latte from Leanne…

This Turbo Fat Charge Latte formula has…

  • The MCT oil: boosts metabolism, kicks up our fat burning.
  • The cacao butter: boosts serotonin levels so you start the day off happily.
  • The collagen: resets leptin, so that your body understands what fuel is what.
  • The hemp hearts: send the message to your body; specifically your hormone system, that everything is safe. 3 tablespoons of hemp hearts are 0 net carbs, so shouldn’t stop your “fast” if you’re practicing intermittent fasting.

Turbo Fat Charge Latte

  • 8 oz. brewed decaf coffee or regular coffee or your favorite tea or hot water
  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil or coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon cacao butter
  • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
  • 2-4 drops alcohol-free stevia, optional
  • 1 tablespoon grass-fed collagen

Instructions

  1. Brew coffee or tea, add to the jug of your high-powered blender along with MCT oil, cacao butter, hemp hearts and stevia. Blend on high for 1 minute. During the last 10 seconds, add collagen. Transfer to a cup and enjoy.

If this is overwhelming…just start by adding a tsp to tbsp. of coconut or MCT to your tea or coffee in the morning. This action step is better than taking none at all.

Notes

MCT Oil vs. Coconut Oil: Totally a preference thing. Do what feels right.
How To Make Vegan: Replace the collagen with a touch-more hemp seeds, up to 3 tablespoons (3 tablespoons = 3g carbs, 9g protein)

What is MCTs and the Benefits

According to rebootedbody.com, MCT oil is a concentrated form of coconut oil. The extremely healthy saturated fat in coconut is comprised of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT). And MCT oil is a concentrated form of that fat. However, according to healthimpactnews.com, MCT oil has had the amazing fat – lauric acid removed and the author states that eating coconut oil is better…if you are confused, don’t be.  Balance it out. I cook with coconut oil and use it on my hair, skin and teeth. I drink MCT oil and use it for my teeth. Play around and find out what works for you.

Benefits…

It’s a boost for your metabolism. MCTs increase the body’s ability to burn more energy by increasing thermogenesis.

It’s a kick-start to awesome weight loss. MCTs may help reduce the size of fat cells, leading to weight loss.

It’s a constant, steady energy. MCTs provide rapid-fire energy, directly to the places that need it most, burns clean and constant without the energy lulls.

Its rocket fuel for your brain. MCTs quickly raise ketone levels to provide your brain with an alternative fuel that won’t die out.

Let me know how adding MCT or coconut oil to your morning changes affects your outcome…

Healthy Hugs,

Tanya

The Keto Beginning

The Bulletproof Diet by Dave Asprey

Aug 262015

For decades I have had eating issues. Where once I would eat to stuff down my emotions and not really be conscious as to what I was doing, I am now conscious but can still have trouble stopping myself.

In my teens I controlled my intake of food and was bulimic. I open up in my blog post, Cookie Dough in the Dark, which you can read here. I was searching for stability and for more love than I was getting, but I didn’t know that on a conscious level at the time.  Now in my 40’s, I don’t starve myself or toss my cookies, but I do still binge eat and lose myself in food. I really wish I didn’t because I know it’s not healthy, but I have this tugging deep within me. In the past year I have been studying the Chakras more deeply. I thought that to be more evolved in this life I was to work on my higher chakras, but as I’ve learned, it’s the lower chakras that I need to heal, specifically my Root Chakra which when unbalanced can result in eating disorders.

I grew up with very loving parents but for whatever reason I craved more emotional love than they gave me. Your root chakra grounds you to whatever brings you stability in your life. I had enough food, water and shelter but I lacked emotional grounding, safety and security. I know that I was affected horribly by my parent’s divorce. I felt alone, unsafe, unloved and I believe now that this affected many of my behaviours with myself and my friends as I didn’t trust anyone because I thought they would leave me. May sound irrational but that’s how I interpreted what was going on in my life & frankly that’s what matters. I don’t wallow in self-pity but I am conscious enough now to link how I was feeling to my actions. I used food for comfort, albeit, a false comfort. I used it to feel safe, to feel secure because I felt I wasn’t enough for anyone around me. I overate to compensate for what was missing in my life. I ate because I was angry and I didn’t know how else to deal with it. I insulated myself with extra fat to protect myself from those around me.

Sometimes you can explain something rationally but your deeply ingrained habits can take over. I know that my greatest desire is to be healthy and to live a long healthy life, but when I’m triggered by something (and I’m becoming more and more aware of what it is) that can fly out the window and copious amounts of sugar become my friend again.

Sure I can exercise willpower and not have sugar in my house, but it doesn’t work…it’s always somewhere! This is where the deeper work comes in. I really have to get honest about what I am feeling and find out what my triggers are so that I can work on healing myself. I have to work through the pain that I have pushed so deeply down within myself. It’s not easy but I’m doing it slowly and surely.

So, the first chakra is about rooting myself – it’s about feeling safe. So I need to trust in my journey. I need to let go of the fear that I am not enough. I need to know that I am loved by me and that I am a unique human being and that I matter. I need to believe this from me. To help ground myself I practice grounding poses such as knee to chest pose (Pavanamuktasana), head to knee pose (Janu Sirsansana), Lotus flexion (Padmasana), squatting pose (Malasana) and Tree Pose. I also go into nature and notice my connection to the beautiful earth that I live on. And teaching Core Conditioning also helps as I infuse many of the teachings from all of the Chakras into the class (and this benefits us all).

I also realize that the second chakra is constantly seeking pleasure and that I need to keep my ego in check. The lure of habit can overcome me, trap me and cause me to overindulge as I lose my awareness of the present moment and instead try to recreate a past pleasure. Just by being aware of this I can begin to become conscious and know that I can change this pattern (albeit with some patience and work).

When I first started studying the chakras, I did not see any connection to my life and the issues that I had/have. But with more education, more digging, more time, it was like a flower growing in my garden – it began to bloom- and with each stage I began to see more. A flower doesn’t just show up one day. It lays its roots beneath the earth and with enough love (water, air, sun), it begins to flourish, slowly but surely, into a magnificent flower. In this fast paced world we live in, we often want immediate results, we want to be told to eat this or do this exercise and all will be well. But it never works long term. I know it takes time. And as much as I wish the self-sabotage could be nipped in the bud, I am granting myself time to open up and let go as I grow in this world.

During the 12 weeks of the Busy Mama Detox, I know you will discover many wonderful things about yourself that will root and grow. Without force, you will learn what makes you tick and why you are ready to let go & move forward. You will have more energy and better health because you will take the time to listen to yourself and to trust yourself.

I look forward to you becoming part of the Busy Mama Detox adventure starting September 6th. It’s another wonderful step in your journey towards having an abundance of energy, a clear mind, an ageless beauty, a smaller waistline and the best health ever!!!! It was late, almost 9 at night, when Justin Holden pulled the icy pizza box from the refrigerator at the Brookville Supermarket in Washington, D.C.

He stood in front of the open door, scanning the nutrition facts label.

A close relative had recently had a heart attack, and in the back of his mind there was this idea stalking him: If he put too much salt in his body, it would eventually kill him.

For this reason the information in the label wasn’t exactly soothing: 1,110 milligrams of sodium seemed like a lot.

But there was even worse-sounding stuff at the bottom of the label. Continue reading »

2-minute Belly Rub

This exercise works like a gentle colonic irrigation that helps speed up a sluggish digestive system (which usually carries at least 5lbs of fecal matter within it). The exercise effectively metabolizes the fatty tissues around the stomach and intestines, and flushes them out of your body.

Belly Rub Method:

1)      Lie flat on your bed or floor

2)      Expose your abdominal area (tummy)

3)      Rub your hands vigorously to create heat (about 15 seconds)

4)      Place one hand on your belly button and begin to rub in an outward circular motion

5)      Use fairly firm but comfortable pressure at a slow pace (1 circle/second)

6)      Concentrate on the heat building up in, around and throughout your stomach

7)      Do about 40-50 circles (about 2 minutes)

Tips:

  • Important to keep abdominals warm and to warm up hands
  • Do in the morning before getting out of bed and just before you go to bed
  • Don’t do immediately after a heavy meal, pregnant or if you have moderate to severe abdominal conditions

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the stomach is the center of energy. Besides melting away adipose tissue (fat), it can also:

  • Stimulate the abdominal organs
  • Help to speed up slow digestion & remedies constipation
  • Increase blood circulation in the abdominal area
  • Help to heal indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and the adverse effects of overeating.

Start your day with your detox lemonade

Your thought and beliefs are the single most important indicator of your state of health. Your beliefs and thoughts are wired into your biology. They become your cells, tissues and organs. There’s no supplement, no diet, no medicine, and no exercise regimen that can compare with the power of your thoughts and beliefs. That’s the very first place you need to look when anything goes wrong with your body.”

– Christiane Northrup, M.D., Goddesses Never Age

Christiane goes on to explain that when something does go wrong in your body, it’s a wake-up call to pay attention. Perhaps you haven’t been conscious of the issue or emotion until it shows up physically.
