Fruit Explosion Smoothie

James and I made this one day just out of the blue for an afternoon snack.  It’s light and refreshing and good for you too!! Citrus Fruits are acidic which provide great benefits when detoxing, also the fibre helps you poop!!

1 peeled orange

½ – 1 cups fresh or frozen strawberries

1 frozen banana

1 tbsp hemp seeds

1-2 cups water

How is your liquid day going? Did you get past the “I need to chew” phase? Are you peaceful or a little on edge? What are noticing?

Are doing the whole day or a meal (which meal)?

I find the easiest part is drinking these delicious concoctions. The hardest part is around 3-5pm when I feel the need to chew or I’m watching people eat (which, I mean really, I am eating really super nutritious food but it’s that cultural conditioning of having a plate, knife and fork). I also realize how much I sedate myself with munching or use it for a pick me up (Try the 3pm Pick Me Up Smoothie).

Blood Cleansing Smoothie 

The cleaner your blood, the better your health.

Think about dusting your home – dust flies up and while some might be carried away on the cloth or sucked up by the vacuum cleaner, some settles back down on to the surfaces. It can get overwhelming to walk into a supermarket or health food store these days (especially when about 17,000 new food products are introduced each year) so keep your eyes open for these four superfoods to add to your daily smoothie or meals.

Chlorella and spirulina are two single-celled algae that thrive in the sunniest parts of freshwater bodies. This is because chlorella and spirulina possess complementary rather than identical nutrient profiles. For example, chlorella tends to contain more chlorophyll and iron than spirulina. Spirulina, on the other hand, contains more protein, gamma-linoleic acid (a beneficial fat that is essential for brain function) and cancer-fighting phycocyanin than chlorella. Wild Strawberry & Raspberry Leaf Smoothie

Ever thought of putting the leaves of wild strawberries and raspberries into your smoothie? Hmmm, I didn’t until I started to read Free Food and Medicine by Markus Rothkranz and took a Wild Edibles Course. Now you should see the weeds that get added to our smoothies, juices and salads.  When I walk my dogs you will see me picking many different weeds and on my last walk I picked strawberry and raspberry leaves for this Wild Smoothie that I created.

When picking the leaves make sure they are in an area that has not been sprayed with any nasty chemicals and that the leaves are in good condition. Pick from different areas so as not to wipe out an entire wild patch (in other words…leave some for next time and years to come). There are no poisonous look alike to the strawberry leaf (and the wild strawberry flower is edible too) and if you don’t know what a raspberry leaf looks like check out the these pictures (no known poisonous look a likes either)

Now why would I do add these to the things I eat?

Cancer Prevention Tips

While reading Cancer is Not a Disease by Andreas Moritz, I learned that perhaps this is the best time to wear sunglasses, if at all!

The wonderful ultraviolet light from the sun is one of the most powerful natural medicines the world has ever seen and one way we are blocking it is by wearing sunglasses (and sunscreen and staying indoors, and wearing clothes – you get the point).

By the year 1933, researchers found there were over 165 different diseases (almost every type of cancer, diabetes, hypertension and tuberculosis) for which sunlight proved to be a beneficial treatment but the sun’s healing rays were ineffective if a patient was wearing sunglasses. WHY? Sunglasses block out important rays of the light spectrum which the body requires for essential biological functions.

UV rays in sunlight actually stimulate the thyroid gland to increase hormone production, which in turn increases the body’s metabolic rate which assists in weight loss and improved muscle development. EXERCISE….I know, but I had to bring it up because it really is THAT important!

Exercise is a BENEFIT to preventing cancer and also one of the best ways to combat treatment-related fatigue is you are currently undergoing chemotherapy.

  • Cancer cells are oxygen deprived cells that don’t want oxygen…BAM…along comes exercise which floods your body with oxygen and cancer cells die with oxygen…make sense?
  • Exercise also improves your immune response

Beneficial Exercise Tips

  • If you have cancer don’t do strenuous exercise.  Light walking, stretching, pilates and yoga are wonderful additions to your week. Try this beautiful relaxing routine – Wild at Heart or some stretching
  • If you exercised before cancer keep it simple while undergoing treatments and if you didn’t exercise before cancer keep it simple while undergoing treatments!

I can’t rest…I’ve got to get this done!!

Your immune system needs SLEEP!!! Eight to nine hours in complete darkness. A weak immune system CANNOT keep your body clean inside which results in congestion and threatens cellular life.

Your body is a beautifully well oiled machine that wants to be in perfect health.  It has circadian rhythms that keep your body working optimally but that we often ignore or just don’t know about.

If you continually go to bed after 10pm you will enforce a hormonal shift in your body that can lead to chaotic conditions in your body. The secretion of melatonin (one of the pineal gland’s most powerful hormones) starts between 9:30pm-10:30pm (depending on age), inducing sleepiness. If you ignore your internal clock, you throw this and many other hormonal cycles out of balance.   The pineal gland controls:

  • Reproduction
  • Sleep and motor activity
  • Blood pressure
  • The immune system
  • The pituitary and thyroid glands
  • Cellular growth
  • Body temperature and many other vital functions

I know I’ve had my share of late nights and will do my very best to honor my body and put it to sleep earlier and to rise earlier. If you rise around 6am-7am (and went to bed around 10pm), then you are following a natural sleep/wake cycle. If you are getting out of bed after 8am-9am then you are messing with your elimination cycle (constipation anyone??). Waste material that accumulated in your rectum and bladder wants to be eliminated between 6-8am. If you are sleeping in because you went to bed too late, this waste is held instead of eliminated and perhaps even partly reabsorbed. A sea of yellow, a landscape of golden kisses or a pest that you try to kill…..how do you view these greens that grow on your lawn and contain an abundance of nutrients?

Currently I’m taking a Wild Edibles Course and learning all about the free food that is available to us when we walk out our doors! And to learn even more, I attended the Dandelion Day in Peterborough at the beginning of May which was a great event. I have a feeling you are going to be eating more wild greens in the years to come…dandelion leaves are for sale in the supermarkets now, what’s next?
