Honestly, do I really need to exercise???

Well, I guess you don’t, but you’d be missing out on all the wonderful things that your body can do for you and showing it the respect it deserves! Not only will your body feel better but you will have more energy, sleep better, and your mind will be more at ease and focused.  The benefits of exercise are endless and I believe that just by getting up and moving you will find this out for yourself!

Tanya and I worked together for a few months and then I moved away.  When we started I weighed about 175 lbs. Since I moved, I’ve continued to learn more about nutrition, sleep and moving my body and keeping on the path we discussed. I am now down to 145 lbs, eating better, sleeping better and much more active. Thanks for giving me that push to really start THINKING about what I was doing.  Goals

The biggest motivation killer is having your goals TOO BIG.  They become overwhelming and unachievable leaving you feeling like a failure….not a great way to start.

Start with very small achievable goals that will leave you feeling satisfied that you have completed them and motivate you to continue pursuing them.

Adding just 5 minutes of exercise 3x per week is absolutely attainable…sound too easy?  Try it and when you have completed the week, add an extra minute….before you know it you will be up to 30 minutes of exercise.

Keep in mind that goals that are extrinsic, such as weight or clothing size can motivate you to a point but will soon dwindle.  Long-term success tends to come from intrinsic goals, such as sleeping better, having more energy. Pay attention to how exercise is affecting those areas of your life.  As Carolyn states in her testimonial, she is sleeping better which typically causes you to have more energy for working out (& living)  and less carbohydrate  munching for energy…see the cycle.

 Habits

21 days, 3 weeks, however you want to say it, it takes that long to form a new habit.  You will need to motivate and apply some discipline to get yourself through this time, but the rewards will be a plenty!

Jeremy Dean, author of Making Habits, Breaking Habits, states that, “The stronger that habit becomes, the more likely you are to perform it automatically without having to exert your willpower.”

From years of experience and advice I give to my clients; making habits requires you to be conscious of them, and to be conscious of them you must know the habit you want to begin and then commit to doing it.  Write it down, put it in your day timer/your phone as a reminder, place it on post-it notes, you must see it until it becomes automatic.

Getting started tips or needing some motivation…

  • Find something you love to do
  • Get a buddy for support and accountability
  • Learn the PROPER way to exercise so that you get results and don’t hurt yourself or waste your time
  • VARIETY – keep trying new ways to be active and healthy
  • Schedule it into your day- write it, type it, whatever it is, write it down or you will not commit to it!
  • Make the goal attainable so that you feel positive about continuing
  • Ditch the “all or nothing mentality” – life happens – just pick up and start again
  • Reward yourself with healthy treats – a movie night, a hot bath, a walk with a girlfriend
  • Celebrate your SUCCESS – every baby step counts!

 

Why exercise is important

  • Exercise strengthens your heart! Reducing your risk of heart disease!
  • Lowers your blood pressure if needed
  • Exercise improves the strength of muscles and bones as well as ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Healthy joints = happy mobile person!
  • Exercise increases your basal metabolic rate. Burn more calories at rest! Muscle Mania = excellent choice to boost your metabolism!
  • Exercise strengthens your immune system. Research shows that people with active lifestyles are less likely to get cancer. Exercise increases the number of white blood cells called lymphocytes, which are the cells that fight disease.
