Snack time

So how can you get your kids eating healthier snacks….and psst, are they even hungry?…if they don’t want an apple or some broccoli chances are that there is boredom, fatigue or frustration behind their eating.

Wikipedia defines SNACK as …

a portion of food often smaller than a regular meal, generally eaten between meals. Snacks come in a variety of forms including packaged and processed foods and items made from fresh ingredients at home. Snack foods are typically designed to be portable, quick and satisfying.

So how can you get your kids eating healthier snacks….and psst, are they even hungry?…if they don’t want an apple or some broccoli chances are that there is boredom, fatigue or frustration behind their eating.

Whether you are at home or on the GO, you want healthy snacks that properly fuel your kids so that they don’t have highs and lows but rather sustained energy and mental alertness.

Snack ideas for when you are at home:

  • Always have fruits and veggies on hand and cut up if possible.  Take them when you go out and if they really want a slice of pizza or some other “not so healthy snack”, this is a great way to bribe – yes I did say that- them.  Works every time! And if they don’t finish the “healthy stuff “or even want it….then they do not get the “not so healthy snack”
  • Keep CRAP out of your house. If there aren’t chips, cookies, candies, ice cream etc to snack on…well, you guessed it…no one will be eating it. Stock your fridge with fruits and veggies. And hey, if they want a sweet treat…make it from scratch with love!
  • Ask them if they are really hungry or are they tired, bored, frustrated – teach them to connect to their emotions and not to push them down with food
  • Experiment and have them make their own snacks…chat about their nutritious choices
  • Remember progress not perfection…and it also takes 14-25x trying a new food to alter our taste buds…don’t give up
