Love your Ta Ta’s aka…breasts

I was reading the book, How Not to Die by Micheal Greger, M.D. and with Valentine’s Day approaching (I know it’s about the heart and love…but your breasts are very close to your heart!!) I thought I’d share some neat tidbits….

Specifically Michael Greger is discussing how to avoid getting breast cancer. Unfortunately each year about 230,000 American women are diagnosed and 40,000 die from it. But, there are things you can do NOW. Cancer doesn’t grow over night, it takes years, sometimes decades, to form.

“People who are doing the right thing by improving their lifestyles in hopes of preventing cancer may in fact be successfully treating it as well. Don’t wait until you are diagnosed to change your lifestyle, start NOW, it is NEVER too late.”

group MM class shot (8)Exercise:

Darwin said, it’s the survival of the fittest and when it comes to exercise…get fit. Sometimes we get caught up on how much we weigh but it’s deeper than that. Movement offers you a preventative measure against breast cancer (and more) because it tends to lower you circulating estrogen levels. Five hours a week of vigorous exercise can lower estrogen and progesterone exposure by about 20%.

Get Your Greens:

By adding cruciferous (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, kale, etc.) veggies into your daily diet you can significantly reduce your risk of breast cancer. For example, broccoli boosts the activity of detoxifying enzymes in your liver, therefore if you are eating a steak off the BBQ, having a side of broccoli will reduce your carcinogenic load.

Flaxseeds:

These are powerful little seeds that are one of the richest sources of omega 3 fatty acids, but even more exciting is their lignan content. Lignans are phytoestrogens that can dampen the effects of the body’s own estrogen. Tossing a tablespoon into your morning smoothie will help to reduce your risk of having breast cancer.

Massage Your Breasts:

In addition to those tips, I have been using the Breast Health Massage Oil from Living Libations for two years.  I absolutely love that I am taking a simple step to keep my breasts healthy.

By simply applying a few drops to my palms and then massaging around and on my breasts I am stimulating the circulation & lymph drainage thereby regenerating the movement of fluids in and to my breasts.

CANCER

Mum and me

Since 2009 I decided to focus a lot of my time researching cancer/disease prevention…and then in March of 2011 I got a call from my mum and she told me that she had mouth cancer.  She decided to start chemo and radiation immediately and it was very difficult to be so far away from her since she lives in Spain.  There are times that she could not talk, she couldn’t eat and was rushed to the hospital several times. Obviously, I booked a ticket to Spain and when I saw her, she looked lifeless and very weak.  She had been given drinks from the hospital to consume for her calories (marconutrients – carbs, fat and protein) but they were not giving her the micronutrients she need for cell rejuvenation that she so desperately needed.

Within two to three days of my mother being on the nutritional plan that I recommended, I cannot begin to tell you how her eyes started to shine, her energy started to increase and her pain subsided.  Her friends were amazed at her recovery. Continue reading »

The Anti-Cancer Body

Is Your Body in Motion?

Dr. Bouillet from the University of Paris states that exercise reduces the quantity of adipose (fat) tissue, the principal storage site of carcinogenic toxins.  Excess fat is the “toxic waste site” of the human body, says Devra Lee Davis from the University of Pittsburg.

bloated stomachFat cells store toxins

I have been in the fitness field for over two decades and what draws most people to exercise is weight loss, but I think it’s time to look behind the superficial curtain of weight loss for vanity and really understand that excess fat can be dangerous to your health. Your body was designed for movement and physical activity and unfortunately with the conveniences of life, we are not treating our bodies with the respect they deserve.

Physical activity is capable of reducing fat and taking with it its stockpile of contaminants. Movement is a prime method for “detoxifying” the body. YOU control how much movement you put in your day.

Benefits of Physical Exercise

  • Modifies our hormonal balance, it reduces excess estrogen and testosterone that stimulates the growth of cancers
  • Reduces blood sugar levels which results in the secretion of insulin and IGF (increases in insulin and IGF cause inflammation in your body and contribute to the growth and spread of cancerous tumors)
  • Increases your immune system which protects it against stress
  • Acts directly on the cytokines responsible for inflammation by lowering their level in the blood

Why do I add meditation to a lot of my classes?

  • You sleep better
  • You will feel less stressed
  • Your life feels richer with more meaning
  • Benefits your immune system
  • Calms you down and allows you to have perspective
  • Reduces cortisol levels and markers for cancer
  • Allows you to get in touch with your inner self that most of us have trained ourselves to ignore
  • Better regulation of blood sugar levels and reduces inflammation

Here’s a little workout for you….give it a go and modify where needed.

Cancer Prevention Tips

“I wear my sunglasses at night” lyrics by Billy Idol

sunglasses

While reading Cancer is Not a Disease by Andreas Moritz, I learned that perhaps this is the best time to wear sunglasses, if at all!

The wonderful ultraviolet light from the sun is one of the most powerful natural medicines the world has ever seen and one way we are blocking it is by wearing sunglasses (and sunscreen and staying indoors, and wearing clothes – you get the point).

By the year 1933, researchers found there were over 165 different diseases (almost every type of cancer, diabetes, hypertension and tuberculosis) for which sunlight proved to be a beneficial treatment but the sun’s healing rays were ineffective if a patient was wearing sunglasses. WHY? Sunglasses block out important rays of the light spectrum which the body requires for essential biological functions.

UV rays in sunlight actually stimulate the thyroid gland to increase hormone production, which in turn increases the body’s metabolic rate which assists in weight loss and improved muscle development. So get yourself some sun sans the sunglasses and sunscreen but don’t be a silly and fry yourself…use some common sense.

Can using this toothbrush and rinsing with this really decrease your risk of cancer?

Data collected between 1986 and 2002 found that men with gum disease had a 63% higher chance of getting pancreatic cancer, even if they’d never smoked. It is believed that gum disease is a sign of increased inflammation and is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory issues and lung infections.

Two simple tips:

1)      Rinse and swish with salt water several times per day is usually enough to prevent and reverse gun disease and simple enough to do! (Use sea salt or Himalayan salt)

2)      Use a Soladey toothbrush (I have been using one for years and bought is at Living Libations along with their natural teeth and skin products – love them!!!)

Why a Soladey toothbrush?

  • Clinically proven to eliminate more plaque than a regular toothbrush, even without the use of toothpaste and floss
  • Soladey features a titanium oxide metal rod which creates a natural ionic chemical reaction that separates the plaque from your teeth enamel and also removes stains (oh, yeah, whiter teeth baby, without the harsh teeth whitening chemicals!!)

EXERCISE….I know, but I had to bring it up because it really is THAT important!

tall woman stretching

Exercise is a BENEFIT to preventing cancer and also one of the best ways to combat treatment-related fatigue is you are currently undergoing chemotherapy.

  • Cancer cells are oxygen deprived cells that don’t want oxygen…BAM…along comes exercise which floods your body with oxygen and cancer cells die with oxygen…make sense?
  • Exercise also improves your immune response

Beneficial Exercise Tips

  • If you have cancer don’t do strenuous exercise.  Light walking, stretching, pilates and yoga are wonderful additions to your week. Try this beautiful relaxing routine – Wild at Heart or some stretching
  • If you exercised before cancer keep it simple while undergoing treatments and if you didn’t exercise before cancer keep it simple while undergoing treatments!

I can’t rest…I’ve got to get this done!!

baby with rose

Your immune system needs SLEEP!!! Eight to nine hours in complete darkness. A weak immune system CANNOT keep your body clean inside which results in congestion and threatens cellular life.

Your body is a beautifully well oiled machine that wants to be in perfect health.  It has circadian rhythms that keep your body working optimally but that we often ignore or just don’t know about.

If you continually go to bed after 10pm you will enforce a hormonal shift in your body that can lead to chaotic conditions in your body. The secretion of melatonin (one of the pineal gland’s most powerful hormones) starts between 9:30pm-10:30pm (depending on age), inducing sleepiness. If you ignore your internal clock, you throw this and many other hormonal cycles out of balance.   The pineal gland controls:

  • Reproduction
  • Sleep and motor activity
  • Blood pressure
  • The immune system
  • The pituitary and thyroid glands
  • Cellular growth
  • Body temperature and many other vital functions

I know I’ve had my share of late nights and will do my very best to honor my body and put it to sleep earlier and to rise earlier. If you rise around 6am-7am (and went to bed around 10pm), then you are following a natural sleep/wake cycle. If you are getting out of bed after 8am-9am then you are messing with your elimination cycle (constipation anyone??). Waste material that accumulated in your rectum and bladder wants to be eliminated between 6-8am. If you are sleeping in because you went to bed too late, this waste is held instead of eliminated and perhaps even partly reabsorbed. Check out the Busy Mama Detox Program which will give you tips to Detox you bedtime routine and so much more!

These 5 Common Chewing Gum Ingredients Are Linked to Cancer and More

My kids think I’m crazy, but I really think that chewing sugarless (or any) gum will be a taboo like smoking. It’s handed around so freely and bothers me when people offer it to my kids because of the reasons you will read below.

I used to be addicted to chewing gum…Hubba Bubba, Wrigley’s, then sugarless gum like Extra.  I couldn’t figure out why I was always bloated and had headaches…then I started reading…and when you know better you do better.

I quit…and I’ve been off gum for about 15 years…thank you! No easy feat because it used to stop me from eating, calmed my nerves, and freshened my breath. But let me tell you, my stomach thanks me, my brain thanks me….in fact I feel a whole lot better and don’t miss it at all! Continue reading »
