Getting off the Sugar

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I am asked. How can I stop eating sugar?

Many people think because they are not eating “candy” that they are not eating sugar. That’s not TRUE. Sugar lurks everywhere and we are eating & drinking way too much of it.

Besides the obvious – sugar and anything ending in “ose” or artificial sweeteners or anything sweet (expect stevia – which is an herb). You’re an intelligent person – you know where sugar is!!! Breads, pasta, juice, pop, alcohol, pastries, muffins, packaged & prepared foods, oatmeal, chips, potatoes, some fruits and veggies, condiments and on & on (just in case I left any out). I need the caffeine to keep going. I’ll just have a small one? I really can’t live without it. I don’t want to deal with the detox symptoms. Winter 3 Day Body Replenisher

Winter detoxing is a little different than a Spring detox. At this time of year your body is craving warmth which requires eating warmer foods and we are typically hungrier. However, when we eat more, we keep our bodies in a continual digesting mode which takes energy away from detoxing and other necessary functions and makes us more vulnerable to getting sick.

So how can we make the most of detoxing in the winter cooler months?

  1. Wear warmer clothing and wear socks as energy leaves through our extremities.
  2. Take hot showers or baths
  3. Have Infra-red sauna sessions
  4. Cozy up with a great book or herbal tea in front of the fire
  5. Trade in your cooler smoothies for warming broths and soups
  6. To further activate detoxification do hot/cold hydrotherapy. When you are in the shower do 1 minute hot to 30 seconds warm or cold for a few minutes. Have a hot tub? Get in and then out, in and out!!!
  7. Drink water at room temperature.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Amandha Vollmer, BSc, ND, Holistic Health Practioner, the other day and we were discussing skin health……

“I often see people with eczema come to me for assistance. Each time, there is an over-burdened liver and the skin is being used to excrete waste. The waste then sits upon the skin, aggravating it and leading to a rash.

The worst cases I see are those who then were prescribed cortisone topical creams. This temporarily can make the rash lessen, however it not only suppresses the action of the liver, which is trying desperately to get toxins out of the body, but it adds a further toxic load to the liver for processing. It also depresses the immune system leading to a whole other ‘hot mess’.

So no wonder the rash always comes back with a vengeance! Often a stronger cortisone is prescribed and if the suppression continues the body has no choice but to put the overload in the lungs, leading to weakness, wheezing and many times asthma, especially in children. In adults, this action generally leads to the common ‘arthritis’, as the toxins are stored in the only ‘safe’ place the body can put it, the joints (after, of course the lymph system is full).”

 Full moon=replenishment=minerals in ->Monday September 28th

During the full moon the body will more readily absorb minerals and heal. You can work with these natural rhythms of the moon to optimize which results you want.

Prepare yourself for Monday, September 28th  – this is the day your body really absorbs what you put it in ….real living food or dead processed food…choose wisely today!

What will you do on Monday to assist the detoxing of your cells?

  • Start the day with water, detox lemonade, herbal tea, green juice drink, detox broth
  • Have homemade juices/detox broth throughout the day or very light meals
  • Dry Brush before your shower or upon rising

 

The skin is responsible for eliminating 1/3 of the body’s waste everyday – that can equal up to one pound!!! A super fast and effective way it to add dry brushing to your shower/bath routine.

Whether you use a natural bristle brush, a dry brushing mitt, a cheap loofah glove (I’ve tried them all and have finally found the VERY BEST from Living Libations which all my clients love as well), give your body a scrub and:

  • Loosen the dead cells to allow the toxins a quick and clear exit out of your skin!
  • Leave your skin SOFT and GLOWING

Detox Bath

While dry brushing, pour yourself a hot water bath with one-two cups of Epsom salts (or more) and ½- 2 cups of non-aluminum baking soda.

Soak for 20-40 minutes with lights dimmed, perhaps a candle for added relaxation and soft music to drown out any “mama calling from your kids or husband”

For an added cleansing effect, drink a cup of peppermint tea before the bath to promote the release of toxins or even add it to your bath along with soothing essential oils like lavender or chamomile.

Why Epsom Salts & Baking Soda?

  • Safe, natural, non-toxic traditional remedies used to improve well-being

Madeleine Marentette from Grail Springs in Bancroft (great place) has written a book, Grail Springs Holistic Detox for Body, Mind and Spirit, and I love her advice about detoxing with the cycle of the moon.

If you can manage to follow this you may deepen your detox even more, here is what she writes in her book…The rhythm of a new moon supports weight loss and detoxification.

Google the moon cycles and then add the dates into your day timer and see if you can follow her advice.  If not, any time you can have a detox bath, jump in!

According to Sarah Best’s article, “How to Get the Most out of your Detox”, a complete circuit from one full moon to the next takes a month and is divided into two roughly 14-day phases: waxing moon and waning moon, the latter being the best time for detoxing. If this sounds bizarre to you, consider that the gravitational pull of the moon governs the tides of the planet’s oceans and has done since the beginning of time. When we remember this, it is not such a leap to accept that this same force exerts a powerful influence on the flow of fluids into and out of our cells.
The body’s capacity for detoxification is at its highest each month on the day of the new moon. Choosing to consume only juices or light meals of raw fruit and vegetables every new moon is a great health habit to get into. It is also advantageous to do this, or at least eat a very clean diet, on the day of the full moon, for the opposite reason: this is the day on which the body’s capacity for absorption is at its highest.
In the words of Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe in their book Moon Time: “The waning moon detoxifies and washes out, sweats out and breathes out, dries, consolidates, prompts to action and the expenditure of energy.” During the waxing moon, conversely, the body is better at taking in than it is at letting go. Whenever you have any choice in the matter – i.e. unless a health crisis means you must start immediately – always schedule your longer detoxes to happen when the moon is waning. You will get much better results.

You can’t achieve your outcome (goal) if you don’t consistently change a behaviour.

One area we focus on during any of the healthy programs that are offered (Busy Mama Reboot, 10 Day Detox, Holistic Weight Loss/Management) is adding healthy fats to our diets. One change could be adding a fish oil supplement, an avocado to your salad, some hemp/chia seeds to your breakfast or making fat lattes – which my clients LOVE!

The important point is to make one change only and make it a habit before you start adding more habits because then you are more likely to stop doing everything!

We’ve been told for years that eating fat will make us fat…but that is not true. Today there are more low fat/no fat products than ever before and our population is getting more obese by the mouthful.

I bet that you might even be afraid to eat more fat during your day…I know I was. To start my morning with oil added to my morning routine does not sound inviting or productive, but let me tell you, in days I could see the fat melting from my waist and thighs. (Also, my energy went up, my cravings went down and the spikes in my mood leveled out). I have also consciously starting adding more healthy fats to each meal and snack.

 

How did I start this new adventure?

For years I have been consuming MCT oil or coconut oil during the day but never in the morning (such as added to my smoothies, cooking with it or a tablespoon before a meal—because I know the brain is 60% fat and good fats are required for healthy living). After reading the Bulletproof Diet by Dave Asprey, I started to add his brand of Brain Octane to my morning tea (plus his collagen)…this translated into a inches lost from my butt and waistline, a softening of my afternoon slump and my sugar cravings decreasing.

Then I stumbled upon healthfulpursuit.com and loved what holistic nutritionist Leanne Vogel was saying and bought her e-book, The Keto Beginning: Complete Guide +30-day Meal Plan…which has 17 chapters, 147 pages + over 70 high-fat, low-carb, moderate-protein, dairy-, gluten-, sugar-, grain-, legume-free recipes. It’s the rocket fuel for achieving flawless health and effortless weight loss through sound nutrition practices and vibrant food preparation in ways you’ve never seen before.

It has further expanded my knowledge about nutrition and it is definitely worth the read. You can pick up a copy here…..

This Turbo Fat Charge Latte formula has…

  • The MCT oil: boosts metabolism, kicks up our fat burning.
  • The cacao butter: boosts serotonin levels so you start the day off happily.
  • The collagen: resets leptin, so that your body understands what fuel is what.
  • The hemp hearts: send the message to your body; specifically your hormone system, that everything is safe. 3 tablespoons of hemp hearts are 0 net carbs, so shouldn’t stop your “fast” if you’re practicing intermittent fasting.

 

 

Turbo Fat Charge Latte

  • 8 oz. brewed decaf coffee or regular coffee or your favorite tea or hot water

Instructions

  1. Brew coffee or tea, add to the jug of your high-powered blender along with MCT oil, cacao butter, hemp hearts and stevia. Blend on high for 1 minute. During the last 10 seconds, add collagen. Transfer to a cup and enjoy.

If this is overwhelming…just start by adding a tsp to tbsp. of coconut or MCT to your tea or coffee in the morning. This action step is better than taking none at all.

MCT Oil vs. Coconut Oil: Totally a preference thing. Do what feels right.
How To Make Vegan: Replace the collagen with a touch-more hemp seeds, up to 3 tablespoons (3 tablespoons = 3g carbs, 9g protein)

 

What is MCTs and the Benefits

According to rebootedbody.com, MCT oil is a concentrated form of coconut oil. The extremely healthy saturated fat in coconut is comprised of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT). And MCT oil is a concentrated form of that fat. However, according to healthimpactnews.com, MCT oil has had the amazing fat – lauric acid removed and the author states that eating coconut oil is better…if you are confused, don’t be.  Balance it out. I cook with coconut oil and use it on my hair, skin and teeth. I drink MCT oil and use it for my teeth. Play around and find out what works for you.

Oh, here it comes again…that afternoon drowsiness – quick, give me a pick me up, aka- sugar, caffeine – to artificially keep me going…STOP, there is a better way.

For most of us, the cause of mid-day sleepiness (its more sleepiness than actual tiredness/fatigue) is eating too much sugar or carbohydrates around breakfast and not eating enough healthy fats. A sugary morning leads to a quick burst of energy for a few hours followed by a crash in energy levels. During the Gain Energy Lose Fat sessions, everyone tasted a sample of a blended drink and loved it. We talked about why we need fat, and also what is at the root of your fat storage.
