PS – Busy Mama Detox Tip – Just another reason to add fish oil to your morning routine… Fish oil signals genes in the brain to produce a chemical that keeps Alzheimer’s disease at bay. People who take fish oil have better cognitive function as they age, relative to those who don’t take fish oil. Dietary omega-3s, especially fish oils, increase fat breakdown.

Hedonic compensation

You might know the term “hedonism”, which refers to the pursuit of pleasure.

The theory of hedonic compensation suggests that if we feel like we “lose out” on pleasure in one area, we look to compensate for it elsewhere. (Thus, the thought process of “I’ve had a lousy day; I deserve a treat.”)

In 2014, researchers explored three different studies that help to show why exercise alone doesn’t usually produce weight loss.

In these studies, they found that perceiving a physical activity as “fun”, rather than “exercise” meant that:

  • People chose less junk food during meals.
  • People ate less candy when offered a snack from a self-serve container.
  • People chose “healthy” snacks more often than “unhealthy” snacks.

In other words, because exercise is not seen as fun, people compensate by finding fun elsewhere.

You can’t achieve your outcome (goal) if you don’t consistently change a behaviour.

One area we focus on during any of the healthy programs that are offered (Busy Mama Reboot, 10 Day Detox, Holistic Weight Loss/Management) is adding healthy fats to our diets. One change could be adding a fish oil supplement, an avocado to your salad, some hemp/chia seeds to your breakfast or making fat lattes – which my clients LOVE!

The important point is to make one change only and make it a habit before you start adding more habits because then you are more likely to stop doing everything!

We’ve been told for years that eating fat will make us fat…but that is not true. Today there are more low fat/no fat products than ever before and our population is getting more obese by the mouthful.

I bet that you might even be afraid to eat more fat during your day…I know I was. To start my morning with oil added to my morning routine does not sound inviting or productive, but let me tell you, in days I could see the fat melting from my waist and thighs. (Also, my energy went up, my cravings went down and the spikes in my mood leveled out). I have also consciously starting adding more healthy fats to each meal and snack.

 

How did I start this new adventure?

For years I have been consuming MCT oil or coconut oil during the day but never in the morning (such as added to my smoothies, cooking with it or a tablespoon before a meal—because I know the brain is 60% fat and good fats are required for healthy living). After reading the Bulletproof Diet by Dave Asprey, I started to add his brand of Brain Octane to my morning tea (plus his collagen)…this translated into a inches lost from my butt and waistline, a softening of my afternoon slump and my sugar cravings decreasing.

Then I stumbled upon healthfulpursuit.com and loved what holistic nutritionist Leanne Vogel was saying and bought her e-book, The Keto Beginning: Complete Guide +30-day Meal Plan…which has 17 chapters, 147 pages + over 70 high-fat, low-carb, moderate-protein, dairy-, gluten-, sugar-, grain-, legume-free recipes. It’s the rocket fuel for achieving flawless health and effortless weight loss through sound nutrition practices and vibrant food preparation in ways you’ve never seen before.

It has further expanded my knowledge about nutrition and it is definitely worth the read. You can pick up a copy here…..

This Turbo Fat Charge Latte formula has…

  • The MCT oil: boosts metabolism, kicks up our fat burning.
  • The cacao butter: boosts serotonin levels so you start the day off happily.
  • The collagen: resets leptin, so that your body understands what fuel is what.
  • The hemp hearts: send the message to your body; specifically your hormone system, that everything is safe. 3 tablespoons of hemp hearts are 0 net carbs, so shouldn’t stop your “fast” if you’re practicing intermittent fasting.

 

 

Turbo Fat Charge Latte

  • 8 oz. brewed decaf coffee or regular coffee or your favorite tea or hot water
  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil or coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon cacao butter
  • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
  • 2-4 drops alcohol-free stevia, optional
  • 1 tablespoon grass-fed collagen

 

Instructions

  1. Brew coffee or tea, add to the jug of your high-powered blender along with MCT oil, cacao butter, hemp hearts and stevia. Blend on high for 1 minute. During the last 10 seconds, add collagen. Transfer to a cup and enjoy.

If this is overwhelming…just start by adding a tsp to tbsp. of coconut or MCT to your tea or coffee in the morning. This action step is better than taking none at all.

 

Notes

MCT Oil vs. Coconut Oil: Totally a preference thing. Do what feels right.
How To Make Vegan: Replace the collagen with a touch-more hemp seeds, up to 3 tablespoons (3 tablespoons = 3g carbs, 9g protein)

 

What is MCTs and the Benefits

According to rebootedbody.com, MCT oil is a concentrated form of coconut oil. The extremely healthy saturated fat in coconut is comprised of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT). And MCT oil is a concentrated form of that fat. However, according to healthimpactnews.com, MCT oil has had the amazing fat – lauric acid removed and the author states that eating coconut oil is better…if you are confused, don’t be.  Balance it out. I cook with coconut oil and use it on my hair, skin and teeth. I drink MCT oil and use it for my teeth. Play around and find out what works for you.

Cancer Prevention Tips

While reading Cancer is Not a Disease by Andreas Moritz, I learned that perhaps this is the best time to wear sunglasses, if at all!

The wonderful ultraviolet light from the sun is one of the most powerful natural medicines the world has ever seen and one way we are blocking it is by wearing sunglasses (and sunscreen and staying indoors, and wearing clothes – you get the point).

By the year 1933, researchers found there were over 165 different diseases (almost every type of cancer, diabetes, hypertension and tuberculosis) for which sunlight proved to be a beneficial treatment but the sun’s healing rays were ineffective if a patient was wearing sunglasses. WHY? Sunglasses block out important rays of the light spectrum which the body requires for essential biological functions.

UV rays in sunlight actually stimulate the thyroid gland to increase hormone production, which in turn increases the body’s metabolic rate which assists in weight loss and improved muscle development. So get yourself some sun sans the sunglasses and sunscreen but don’t be a silly and fry yourself…use some common sense.

Can using this toothbrush and rinsing with this really decrease your risk of cancer?

Data collected between 1986 and 2002 found that men with gum disease had a 63% higher chance of getting pancreatic cancer, even if they’d never smoked. It is believed that gum disease is a sign of increased inflammation and is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory issues and lung infections.

Two simple tips:

1)      Rinse and swish with salt water several times per day is usually enough to prevent and reverse gun disease and simple enough to do! (Use sea salt or Himalayan salt)

EXERCISE….I know, but I had to bring it up because it really is THAT important!

Exercise is a BENEFIT to preventing cancer and also one of the best ways to combat treatment-related fatigue is you are currently undergoing chemotherapy.

  • Cancer cells are oxygen deprived cells that don’t want oxygen…BAM…along comes exercise which floods your body with oxygen and cancer cells die with oxygen…make sense?
  • Exercise also improves your immune response

Beneficial Exercise Tips

  • If you have cancer don’t do strenuous exercise.  Light walking, stretching, pilates and yoga are wonderful additions to your week. Try this beautiful relaxing routine – Wild at Heart or some stretching
  • If you exercised before cancer keep it simple while undergoing treatments and if you didn’t exercise before cancer keep it simple while undergoing treatments!

I can’t rest…I’ve got to get this done!!

Your immune system needs SLEEP!!! Eight to nine hours in complete darkness. A weak immune system CANNOT keep your body clean inside which results in congestion and threatens cellular life.

Your body is a beautifully well oiled machine that wants to be in perfect health.  It has circadian rhythms that keep your body working optimally but that we often ignore or just don’t know about.

If you continually go to bed after 10pm you will enforce a hormonal shift in your body that can lead to chaotic conditions in your body. The secretion of melatonin (one of the pineal gland’s most powerful hormones) starts between 9:30pm-10:30pm (depending on age), inducing sleepiness. If you ignore your internal clock, you throw this and many other hormonal cycles out of balance.   The pineal gland controls:

  • Reproduction
  • Sleep and motor activity
  • Blood pressure
  • The immune system
  • The pituitary and thyroid glands
  • Cellular growth
  • Body temperature and many other vital functions

I know I’ve had my share of late nights and will do my very best to honor my body and put it to sleep earlier and to rise earlier. If you rise around 6am-7am (and went to bed around 10pm), then you are following a natural sleep/wake cycle. If you are getting out of bed after 8am-9am then you are messing with your elimination cycle (constipation anyone??). Waste material that accumulated in your rectum and bladder wants to be eliminated between 6-8am. If you are sleeping in because you went to bed too late, this waste is held instead of eliminated and perhaps even partly reabsorbed. Raw Coconut Curry Sauce with Steamed Vegetables

Inspired from Jenny Ross – Raw Basics

 

Coconut Curry sauce with Brown Rice and Veg!

  • 1 cup macadamia nuts (soaked for 30minutes)
  • 1 tablespoon raw coconut butter
  • 1 pitted date
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 4 tablespoons curry powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons chopped sweet onion
  • 2 cups coconut water OR 2 cups coconut milk

Mixed Vegetable Seaweed Rolls with Sesame Dipping Sauce

I bought seaweed and it sat unused for a long time.  I eventually started by putting a piece of Kombu in soups or when I was boiling water or making rice to increase the nutritional value.

I like sushi, which uses Nori wraps but I couldn’t get myself to make anything with seaweed at home.  Then one day, I was ready and after reading many recipes I found this one by Ani Phyo in her book Ani’s Raw Food Detox.

It is super simple to make and super delicious.

  • 2 nori sheets, raw and untoasted preferably
  • 2 tbsp miso, unpasteurized, any colour
  • 2 cups sprouts, any type
  • ½ c sliced avocado
  • ¼ c julienned cucumbers
  • ¼ julienned or shredded carrots
  • 1-2 tbsp hemp seeds (optional)

Spread miso on the ½ of the nori sheet. Layer the sprouts, avocado, cucumber and carrots on the miso. Roll it tightly.

Serve with Sesame Dipping Sauce

  •  1 tbsp nama shoyu or tamari
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil, organic
  • 1 tsp sliced scallions or onions
  • Pinch of cayenne (optional)

Whisk everything together.

What great dishes do you make with seaweed?
