Five Cholesterol Myths and What to Eat Instead

During the holidays, it’s tempting to throw your workouts to the side (and the healthy eating too) with the promise to start again in the New Year.Move your body class shots (11)

You may be travelling more, attending more food-oriented gatherings, drinking more and frantically shopping so it can make it tough to keep up with your physical activity.

It’s an incredibly busy time of year so it’s easy to make the excuses to put off exercising. Instead of stopping all together, shift into maintenance mode.

You have worked so hard to gain the positive benefits such as more energy, better sleeps, weight loss or maintenance, and overall better health that it’s a shame to throw that to the side (exercise also keeps us better on track for healthy eating!!), instead use these tips as exercise is a valuable tool to get you through the challenges of the holiday season.

 

Holiday Weight Gain

The holidays are high risk time for packing on the pounds. A nibble here and a sip there can really add up over the upcoming weeks.

Exercise burns calories and maintains your muscle mass so schedule in your workouts for the month of December now. It’s also a great way to carve out some time for yourself.

Plus when you work out you make better choices when it comes to eating.

With parking lots full, choose a spot far away from the store and take the opportunity to get some extra steps into your day with some fresh air!

What you schedule you will do. As someone once said, “Show me your day timer and it will tell all.”

 

Holiday Stress

So much to do. Feeling OVERWHEMLED.

Exercise promotes the release of hormones that improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety.

Schedule some yoga, Pilates, stretching, rolling, meditation and breathing into your December.

When you feel the panic and overwhelm brewing, connect with your breath and practice present moment awareness. We only have this moment!!

 

Depression

The shorter days make you want to cover up with a blanket by the fire or in front of the TV with some simple carb munchies! The shorter colder days can also lead to varying degrees of seasonal depression.

Exercise can reduce symptoms of depression and elevate mood. Adding a daylight walk allows you to soak in some Vitamin D and boost your happiness levels. It’s also a great way to clear your head and relieve stress.

 

Structure

The holidays can throw off your routine. Typically that means our food quality decreases, intake increases, exercise dwindles and then you are not sleeping properly, your energy levels start to decline and your waistbands get tight!

Exercise is the catalyst to keep you on schedule. You will eat better, sleep better, have more energy and be centered each day.

Be proactive and schedule your activities into your month now. Here are some amazing classes for you to choose from.

Excuses are excuses. You will do what is important to you.

Love your Ta Ta’s aka…breasts

I was reading the book, How Not to Die by Micheal Greger, M.D. and with Valentine’s Day approaching (I know it’s about the heart and love…but your breasts are very close to your heart!!) I thought I’d share some neat tidbits….

Specifically Michael Greger is discussing how to avoid getting breast cancer. Unfortunately each year about 230,000 American women are diagnosed and 40,000 die from it. But, there are things you can do NOW. Cancer doesn’t grow over night, it takes years, sometimes decades, to form.

“People who are doing the right thing by improving their lifestyles in hopes of preventing cancer may in fact be successfully treating it as well. Don’t wait until you are diagnosed to change your lifestyle, start NOW, it is NEVER too late.”

Darwin said, it’s the survival of the fittest and when it comes to exercise…get fit. Sometimes we get caught up on how much we weigh but it’s deeper than that. Movement offers you a preventative measure against breast cancer (and more) because it tends to lower you circulating estrogen levels. Five hours a week of vigorous exercise can lower estrogen and progesterone exposure by about 20%.

Get Your Greens:

By adding cruciferous (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, kale, etc.) veggies into your daily diet you can significantly reduce your risk of breast cancer. For example, broccoli boosts the activity of detoxifying enzymes in your liver, therefore if you are eating a steak off the BBQ, having a side of broccoli will reduce your carcinogenic load.

Flaxseeds:

These are powerful little seeds that are one of the richest sources of omega 3 fatty acids, but even more exciting is their lignan content. Lignans are phytoestrogens that can dampen the effects of the body’s own estrogen. Tossing a tablespoon into your morning smoothie will help to reduce your risk of having breast cancer.

Massage Your Breasts:

In addition to those tips, I have been using the Breast Health Massage Oil from Living Libations for two years.  I absolutely love that I am taking a simple step to keep my breasts healthy.

PS – Busy Mama Detox Tip – Just another reason to add fish oil to your morning routine… Fish oil signals genes in the brain to produce a chemical that keeps Alzheimer’s disease at bay. People who take fish oil have better cognitive function as they age, relative to those who don’t take fish oil. Dietary omega-3s, especially fish oils, increase fat breakdown.

Hedonic compensation

You might know the term “hedonism”, which refers to the pursuit of pleasure.

The theory of hedonic compensation suggests that if we feel like we “lose out” on pleasure in one area, we look to compensate for it elsewhere. (Thus, the thought process of “I’ve had a lousy day; I deserve a treat.”)

In 2014, researchers explored three different studies that help to show why exercise alone doesn’t usually produce weight loss.

In these studies, they found that perceiving a physical activity as “fun”, rather than “exercise” meant that:

  • People chose less junk food during meals.
  • People ate less candy when offered a snack from a self-serve container.
  • People chose “healthy” snacks more often than “unhealthy” snacks.

In other words, because exercise is not seen as fun, people compensate by finding fun elsewhere.

It’s an Ugly Word!! One we never want to hear.

CANCER

Mum and me

Since 2009 I decided to focus a lot of my time researching cancer/disease prevention…and then in March of 2011 I got a call from my mum and she told me that she had mouth cancer.  She decided to start chemo and radiation immediately and it was very difficult to be so far away from her since she lives in Spain.  There are times that she could not talk, she couldn’t eat and was rushed to the hospital several times. Obviously, I booked a ticket to Spain and when I saw her, she looked lifeless and very weak.  She had been given drinks from the hospital to consume for her calories (marconutrients – carbs, fat and protein) but they were not giving her the micronutrients she need for cell rejuvenation that she so desperately needed.

Within two to three days of my mother being on the nutritional plan that I recommended, I cannot begin to tell you how her eyes started to shine, her energy started to increase and her pain subsided.  Her friends were amazed at her recovery. Continue reading »
