gift-keeps-giving-2Please join Tanya and Ally this Thursday December 1st from 6:30- 8pm for Karma Yoga at the Bobcaygeon Public School. Admission is by donation and all proceeds go towards a Tower Garden for the students at BPS.

Tanya and Ally watched a presentation about the impact of people growing their own food 365 days a year using a Tower Garden and they were moved to tears and wanted to set up a Karma Yoga Class to raise funds so that the Bobcaygeon Public School could have their very own Tower Garden.

One part of the presentation focused on children growing their own food in schools with a Tower Garden. There are many schools (not to mention food banks and homeless shelters, restaurants etc.) that have already incorporated the Tower Gardens into their class rooms – how exciting!!! When implementing the Tower Gardens in schools, it comes with a complete curriculum and it meets many educational requirements such as biology, chemistry, nutrition, nature, food sustainability, eco-friendly, giving, locavore Movement, organic, social responsibility, & food preparation.

A Tower Garden is:

  • An indoor 365 day garden, with no weeds, no bugs, & uses no soil.
  • It’s self-watering and self-lighting. It uses 90% less water than traditional gardening.
  • Saves you about $200+/month on your grocery bill.
  • Tower Gardens are now in many homes, Schools, Universities, Food Banks, Men & Women’s Shelters, restaurants, and even in the Chicago O’Hare airport, just to name a few places.

towerIt just makes sense to have access to fresh non-gmo, organic produce within arm’s reach, especially in Canada where we have such a short growing season. Studies show that when we have access to healthy produce our health benefits.

Please join us on Thursday December 1st from 6:30-8pm at the Bobcaygeon Public School in the auditorium. Please bring a mat, water and your donation for this great cause. All ages and levels welcome. Please share this invite – here is the link.

whats-it-worthWe will have a Tower Garden set up and will also answer your questions.

Creating A Weekly Successful Family Meal Plan

I began meal planning about 7 years ago when my kids started school and then became AAA hockey players. We were now out of the house 4-5 nights per week and sometimes all weekend. I needed to be better organized and this is an amazing tool. It has saved me time and money by being organized. It’s nothing fancy, just a piece of paper but if you want to go fancy, by all means do so!!

Step 1: Write down all the activities that the children and adults have for the week. Continue reading »

image00510 Breakfast Choices that don’t come from a box

Establishing a healthy morning routine sets the tone for the whole day .

Every morning you get a NEW start…yippee! While sleeping your body has been busy cleaning up what you did to it the previous day…how great is that?

There are some that say, “Eat breakfast as soon as you get up” and others that say, “Wait until you are hungry.” I used to insist my kids eat soon after they got up, but sometimes they weren’t hungry. After much research I decided that if they aren’t hungry why am I insisting that they eat. Isn’t better to honour our bodies and eat when we are truly hungry?

So, when you are ready to start your day…here are some breakfast ideas that can nourish you and your kids. Continue reading »

Twice Baked Potato

Kids love the crispy outer skin of the potatoes!  Potatoes are rich in complex carbohydrates, vitamin C and B6. Plus with all the added goodness that is added this are a great meal with a salad or as a side dish or snack! I also make extra and they can be frozen or kept in the fridge for about 5 days.

1 potato per person, washed – Any potato will do, but I like Yukon Gold or baking potatoes

1-2 tablespoons ghee or coconut oil

1-2 tbsp grass fed collagen Continue reading »

french toast (6)French Goodness Toast

I like to send my kids off with a healthy breakfast and one of them is French Toast….with my secret ingredients.

One of my secret ingredients is Hydrolyzed Collagen.

  • Supports skin, hair and nail growth
  • Good for joints and can help joint recovery
  • Can improve digestion since it naturally binds to water and helps food move more easily though the digestive track
  • Source of protein (though not a spectacular one) but its specific amino acids can help build muscle.
  • All of the amino acids collectively are beneficial to cell reproduction

And for the Mama’s and Papa’s out there:

  • Great source of dietary collagen (side note: collagen is too large to be absorbed by the skin, so those skin creams are pretty useless… get it internally and use coconut oil for lotion!)
  • Can help tighten loose skin
  • Rumored to help with cellulite

Back to School and Packing Lunches or maybe it’s their turn…..

Last year I resigned from making school lunches…well almost….I was the Wednesday lunch maker!  I announced a week before school after giving it much thought that I was retiring.  I mean really, I was making my lunch at the age of 9 and my kids were 9 and 10 last year, so why not follow in my footsteps!

Why did I stop? Continue reading »

healthy hydration in the nation Water, Water, Water!

People need to consume half their body weight in water in ounces. For example, if you are 100lbs, you would consume 50oz of water (that’s 6-7 glasses, 8oz glasses/day). As a rule, after the required amounts of water has been consumed than you can choose from the other choices. Also, space it out throughout the day!

Proper hydration:

Aids digestion

Balances the immune system

Prevents and heals inflammation

Supports cardiovascular health

Promotes healthy skin

Allows our kidneys and bowels to flush out toxic materials that collect within us (should have 2-3 bowel movements per day)

Add a splash of flavour to your water!!

Freshly squeezed lemons, oranges or limes

Slices of cucumber

Slices of strawberries and mint

Just mint from your garden

A few more ways water keeps you lean…click here

Other choices:

Herbal teas made at home- sweetened with maple syrup, coconut syrup, yacon syrup, honey, stevia

Coconut water is “the original and natural sports drink pack with electrolytes!”

Homemade fruit and vegetable juices

If you’re going to drink it…know what you’re drinking!

Fructose is the NUMBER ONE source of calories in North America Watch out BELLY FAT). This is NOT GOOD! It is found in virtually all processed foods and drinks.  For example; pop, soda, carbonated drinks, slushies, Gatorade, and any store bought juice sweetened with sugar, glucose/fructose, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners…just to name a few

These choices will:

Suppress immune system function

Promote inflammation

Spike blood sugars/increase your insulin levels

Increase chronic disease

They serve ABSOLUTELY NO purpose in hydrating your children (or yourself), replacing electrolytes, or giving them a burst of energy.

 Artificial Ingredients

Artificial colours are made out of petroleum, acetone or coal tars.  They are VERY HARD on the brain and the immune system because your body does not recognize them and therefore cannot process them.  Children are the MOST vulnerable as their bodies are still developing. Unfortunately, most conventional snacks and drinks are loaded with additives and should be avoided.

Artificial Colouring and additives can cause:

Impaired learning

Low motivation and frustration

Additives to AVOID:

BHT, BHA, artificial sweeteners, sulfites, potassium bromated, artificial colours, sodium nitrate, MSG, Propylene glycol and parabens.

A note about BPA!  So I’ve mentioned that you should consume copious amounts of water but when doing so, please avoid drinking from plastic. The plastic bottles contain BPA (bisphenol A) which is a chemical that acts as a hormone disruptor. Pick up BPA free water bottles, glass or stainless steel as your preferred cup choices.
