You’re so lucky to be thin and in shape

…Pardon??

My passion is health and longevity. Skinny and thin doesn’t impress me much. Strong, independent, happy, empowering, and healthy people impress me! People who want the best health for themselves and their families excite me!

I wasn’t a super star athlete as some people have assumed because of my chosen career path. I was a person who did some activity. I figure skated for 5 years from ages 7 to 13. I did baton, I dabbled in track and field in high school and attended aerobics classes throughout high school and university.

In 1992, I graduated from The University of Western Ontario with no idea of what I wanted to do. I decided to attend George Brown College and lived and breathed their Fitness and Lifestyle Management Program. I was HOOKED on exercise. I truly loved how it made me feel…strong, independent, tight, thin, and happy.

 

“Isn’t a Calorie and Calorie?”

For 25 years I have consistently worked out but I wasn’t always healthy.  I’d mastered the routine of exercise and basically thought I could eat what I wanted as long as I was exercising…WRONG! I ended up on a vicious cycle of calories in vs. calories out. I did not consider the quality of the calories. I traded the carrots and apples (high sugar you know) for cookies…what’s the difference, isn’t a calorie a calorie? I ate the no fat/low fat food, chewed sugarless gum until my jaws ached and also binged on all the wrong foods such as baked goods, processed foods, and too much bread & pasta.  I was an emotional eater. I was addicted to sugar! I kept working out hard just to keep the fat off my body. I was tired, I was sick and I needed to change, but I really didn’t know where to start!

“Eat less, work out harder, really?”

I didn’t understand the pH balance of my body; I didn’t understand the effects of aspartame and other processed food products on my body, my mind and my spirit.  I didn’t understand how to balance my blood sugars for fat loss. I didn’t know about organics, non-GMOs and toxins. I didn’t know about nutrient deficient vs. nutrient dense foods. My weapon of choice was food to deal with all of my emotions. And all I ever heard was, “eat less, eat low fat, work out harder, and must be genetic.”

Armed with this knowledge that I collected over the years, I then had to face the facts that I was going to have to change some things about how I was living. Knowing and doing are different things all together and at times I really wasn’t ready to face some changes.  This I also learned is ok! I can only change what I am ready to change. To make changes that I WILL do and not worry about the other changes until I am mentally, physically and emotionally ready.

My journey with food and living a healthier life may be something you identify with and some of you might think it is downright crazy and can’t relate at all. All the steps I have taken are and continue to be my journey toward optimum health. I want to be healthy for myself, but also for my children and husband.

What’s the Magic Pill?

When I was younger, I certainly wished for a magic pill that I could pop in my mouth, but somewhere along the way, I realized the pill is just taking life day-by-day and exploring who I am and where I need to go. Through each experience I have grown stronger and now accept my challenges with excitement rather than dread. The growth dies when I don’t learn from my mistakes or cease to push myself forward. It doesn’t  mean that I have to suddenly start to change my forms of exercise, change my eating habits and deal with my  emotional  issues all at once, it means that I opened myself up to the possibilities and the challenges that lay before me and began to change what I could in that moment.

All of us have a journey to fulfill; there isn’t a finish line. It’s a growing, an experience that we should open ourselves up to, not criticize ourselves for. For me, “I wish”, is a waste of time, it’s a waste of my thoughts.

     First Steps

I truly believe the first step is conscious awareness.  I needed to slow down and be conscious about what I was doing and be honest with myself. It is through this awareness that incredible changes started to take place.  I began to notice patterns that I would break into smaller pieces. Then I worked on the smaller pieces, such as noticing that I was eating when I was frustrated. I changed this to recognizing my frustration and digging into the feeling a little deeper. I made a conscious decision to breathe (most of the time!) instead of automatically reaching for food; and by food, I mean baked goods not spinach!

10-reasonsIf someone had told me in my mid 30’s that I would be juicing, blending, doing wheatgrass shots, eating maca or bee pollen etc., exploring raw and super foods, seeking out juice bars, breathing more, growing my own vegetables and herbs, see my amazing Tower Garden where I am growing food 365 days a year, I would have given them a funny look!

My goal changed from being “thin” to being “healthy and happy” and it’s absolutely amazing what I’ve discovered.

We rebuild ourselves constantly. It has been said that 98% of the atoms in our bodies are replaced in two years and within 7 years 100% of our atomic structure is replaced.

So remember, every healthy lifestyle change you make is a positive step in the right direction….who will you be in 7 years??? It really is up to YOU! Believe in yourself and the process of change. Set your intentions. Know you will fall down but you will also pick yourself back up again. Enjoy this great ADVENTURE called LIFE!
